Player evaluation:
Larry Croom
RB, UNLV

War Room analysis
Strengths:
Is a versatile athlete and a tough runner with very good vision and patience. Is quicker than fast. He runs with very good body control and balance, his hips are smooth, and he shows some elusiveness in the open field. Has soft hands and is a solid route runner as a receiver out of the backfield. Is a technically sound and willing pass blocker and has solid experience and potential in the return game.

Weaknesses: Lacks the size and speed of an NFL running back. Does not show the burst to turn the corner or the acceleration to run away from defenders in the NFL. Is a tough runner but lacks the size and strength to overpower defenders. Won’t push the pile as a short-yardage runner. Does not show a second gear as a receiver after the catch. Although he isn’t afraid to mix it up, he will get overwhelmed at the point of attack as a pass blocker even more in the NFL than he did in college. Bottom line: Croom played his first two seasons at Arizona before transferring to UNLV and sitting out the ’01 season. He split carries in 2002 before taking over as the starter in ’03 and finished with an average of 4.5 yards on 208 carries. Croom also had 21 receptions as a senior and saw significant time as a punt- and kickoff-return specialist during his two seasons at UNLV. He is a diminutive but versatile running back prospect. He lacks the size, power and speed to develop into anything more than a backup in the NFL, but because he is a tough and shifty runner, as well as an effective receiver and return man, Croom has value as a late-round prospect.

Dan Pompei analysis
Is a decent all-around back who can run, catch and block. Has some quickness, but lacks top speed. Sees the field well. Would make a good third-down back. Also can be a return man. Had a nice week at the Blue-Gray game. No. 20 on Pompei's RB rankings

Croom - is a very good reciever out of the backfield. A 3rd down type back in the NFL.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the Cards wanted the RB out of Tulane in the 5th round Madewele. But the Vikes grabbed him (not sure why) in the 4th round.

They don't really have a 3rd down speed back who can catch. Ala Amp Lee and David Palmer in MIN days.

Damien Anderson was a speed guy that could catch before his crash. Hopefully he will be in shape to fill this slot.

The key is how good a pass catcher is he?

Could he be our new punt returner so Boldin doesnt have to? Having Boldin back there scares the crap out of me.

Boldin will never return punts again. If he can't do it Karl Williams can and that is why he came here.

Yes I like Croom a lot as well. He has speed and he is quick just not super fast. He had a couple of really good games this year for UNLV.

As a UDFA he is a steal!

Obviously the key to him making the team will be his value on special teams. If he can become a solid return guy he will make this team.

Croom prepared -- with or without football

Larry Croom didn't have time to talk. His statistics class at UNLV was getting ready to start.

While many prospects for this weekend's NFL Draft are doing just about everything but attending classes, Croom is finishing his sociology degree. He could be taken in the late rounds Sunday or might sign as a free agent, and he is probably UNLV's best draft prospect.

Either way, he isn't banking his entire future on football. Even if Croom winds up playing 10 years in the NFL, he will have his degree by next month.

"Going to college for five years, I definitely want to get it, not only to make my family proud, but for myself down the road," Croom said. "It's a milestone."

True. But I am not sure he would be an ideal 'return' man. Maybe on special teams on kickoff return as one of the up backs or on KO.

Either way your right, but he is a solid guy with a lot of talent

Rod was quoted as saying we could only fit 4 UDFA's onto our 83 (3 exempted) roster. Fordyce is already accounted for so that means we'd only be adding 5. So who then is the dude who'd we'd have to release?

Note #1 - Based on Rod's earlier comments, we still need to add a TE and a safety (plus - if the total is really 6 including Fordyce - another player).

Note #2 - Croom was in at least one of the secondary All Star games (Blue Gray, East West, Gridiron) and looked pretty good.
