With the Philadelphia 76ers now having a new leader in the form of Mike Gansey as the team's new President of Basketball Operations, the attention now turns to the offseason. The Sixers will look to fill some holes on the roster as they look to move forward following a Round 2 sweep by the New York Knicks in which the bench unit had its issues.
The Sixers have a strong starting lineup led by Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe in the backcourt along with veterans Joel Embiid and Paul George in the frontcourt. Now, Gansey and Co. will look to make some moves around the margins through the draft and in free agency as they look to make the right decisions to climb the ladder in the East and dethrone the Knicks.
Here are three guards who make sense for the Sixers in the upcoming free agency period that shouldn't demand any big deals:
A reliable veteran of 13 years in this league, Hardaway can hop off the bench and knock down 3s in an instant to make a real difference. He shot 40.7% from deep in the 2025-26 season playing next to Nikola Jokic in Denver, and would likely be able to shoot a similar percentage playing next to Embiid, Maxey, and George. He can be a bit streaky at times with his shot, but he makes up for it with steady play and being reliable on a nightly basis. He would fit well on this Sixers team with his ability to help on both ends.
Standing at 6-foot-3, Goodwin is a smaller guard who isn't exactly a playmaker and he isn't going to run much offense, but he is a bulldog of a defender. Per Cleaning the Glass, he had a 2.7% steal percentage in 2025-26--good for the 94th percentile--and an offensive rebounding percentage of 8.1% landing in the 98th percentile. He has a valuable piece to have if the Sixers want to find ways to defend the elite guards in the East like Cade Cunningham, Jalen Brunson, and others. Offensively, he did shoot 37.1% from deep as he fully embraced the 3-and-D role while with the Phoenix Suns. He would make sense for the Sixers next to their star players.
Trent will be available if he declines his $3.9 million player option, which he likely will after a tumultuous season in Milwaukee, and he would bring a shooting aspect to Philadelphia. He shot 38.7% from deep with the Bucks in 2025-26 and played for coach Nick Nurse for 2-plus seasons with the Toronto Raptors, so there is a familiarity aspect for him with the Sixers. One has to wonder what Gansey will be looking for in the offseason, but one can never have enough shooting and he was influential in bringing in Sam Merrill to Cleveland during his time with the Cavaliers. One has to believe Trent would be a guy on Philadelphia's radar.
