Every player wants to hit the ground running and start the new season fast once training camp begins. But for which Indianapolis Colts players is this a must?
The reasons a strong training camp showing is vital can vary from player to player, but all three of these offensive players require a quick start once practices begin.
Treadwell finds himself in the mix for the starting WR3 role, competing with Ashton Dulin and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine. But even if Treadwell doesn't secure that job, he is still positioned to make a run at earning a spot on the 53-man roster.
Up to this point in his Colts' tenure, Treadwell has spent his share of time on the practice squad. But with the wide receiver depth taking a hit this offseason, his experience -- both in the NFL and in Shane Steichen's offense -- could be quite valuable. The Colts could also utilize more of a rotation at that WR3 spot, with matchups and in-game situations dictating who is on the field, which could provide Treadwell with another opportunity to earn playing time.
He's also shown he can contribute to multiple special teams phases as well, which will factor into the equation as Steichen and Chris Ballard construct the final roster.
If Richardson performs well, he could secure the backup quarterback role, and in that position, he's one play away from entering a game. A good performance throughout camp and the preseason could also help facilitate a trade as well.
However, on the flip side, if Richardson continues to battle inconsistency, he will be QB3 on the depth chart, and that could potentially further hurt his trade market, which already isn't very robust. He may then enter the upcoming offseason with little momentum as a free agent.
Travis will be starting at right tackle for the Colts, and his ability to get off to a fast start will dictate how good the offensive line unit is as a whole in the early going. That, in turn, will greatly impact the rest of the offense. Consistent success begins up front with the offensive line providing a run game to lean on and time in the pocket for the quarterback.
At this position, the sum of this group together is greater than any one or two players individually. The play of the collective unit will dictate what the ceiling is. On a unit that is returning four starters and has two established players on the left side of the line, Travis is the relative unknown.
