One of the Pittsburgh Steelers biggest in-house free agents this offseason was tight end/fullback Connor Heyward. The younger brother of Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward, his spot on the roster always felt secure but according to a report by ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter, Heyward is headed to the Las Vegas Raiders on a two-year contract.
Here are our three big takeaways from the move.
Heyward was the closest thing to a fullback the Steelers had on the roster. He's more of a hybrid between tight end and fullback and this could be why he wasn't re-signed. But historically, McCarthy has utilized the fullback position on offense. Most famously, former Steelers fullback John Kuhn was McCarthy's fullback from 2007-2015.
We finally got to see Heyward have a legitimate role on the Steelers offense in 2025 when former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith brought the Tush Push to Pittsburgh with Heyward as the "quarterback" on the play. Without Smith and Heyward, have we seen the last of the Tush Push?
We will give you two names to keep in mind if the Steelers do chose to bring in a replacement who is more pure fullback. Michigan's Max Bredeson and Oklahoma's Jaren Kanack. Very different types of players but the two best in the draft.
