The 2027 ODI World Cup is set to feature its largest field yet, with 14 nations set to compete.

This is a significant expansion from the 10-team structure used across the previous two editions of the tournament.

Co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have already locked in their places automatically through hosting duties.

Beyond that, the next eight highest-ranked sides in the ICC men's ODI rankings, calculated as they stand in March 2027, will progress directly into the tournament without needing to go through qualifiers.

Should South Africa happen to sit within that top eight independently of their automatic hosting spot, the ninth-ranked team would then earn direct entry instead.

2027 ODI World Cup: Qualification process explained

The qualification system begins with the Challenge League, made up of 12 teams divided across two pools of six, with each pool contesting three separate round-robin tournaments throughout the qualifying cycle. The top two finishers from each pool then advance into the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

There is a separate Cricket World Cup League 2 featuring eight teams. The top four teams will qualify directly for the 2027 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

In the Qualifier Playoff, the two lowest-ranked Full Member nations in the ODI standings as of September 30, 2026, excluding hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, will have direct entry.

It also brings together the bottom four teams from each CWC League 2 and the Challenge League. The top four finishers from this Playoff will advance into the main World Cup Qualifier.

The World Cup Qualifier itself is scheduled to run from February 22 to March 23 next year, featuring ten teams competing for the final four places in the tournament.

This includes the 11th- and 12th-ranked teams in the ODI rankings, the top four finishers from League 2, and the top four teams emerging from the Qualifier Play-off. Only the top four sides from this ten-team Qualifier will ultimately book their place at the 2027 World Cup.
