Summer is here, sort of, and it is everyone’s favorite time of the year, scouting time. Every year, we do Summer Scouting to preview college football for Bucs fans and give them names to follow and watch in the fall as needs pop up for Tampa Bay.
Are we going to write about quarterbacks? Offensive tackles? Edge rushers? You know it, but why? Because other NFL teams will draft them, just as they will draft every other position. It all matters whether these players end up on the Bucs, the Bears, or the Steelers. We write these so Bucs fans can be the most informed fans.
So if you are still with us, enjoy our latest Summer Scouting report as we prepare you for the Fall.
Anto Saka enters the 2026 season as one of the more intriguing transfer defenders in college football. After spending four seasons at Northwestern, Saka heads to Texas A&M with a productive résumé that includes multiple All-Big Ten honors, consistent pass-rush production, and experience playing in a variety of defensive roles. While he was never a full-time snap leader for the Wildcats, Northwestern's heavy defensive line rotation played a role in that usage pattern.
What stands out on film is Saka's versatility. He was utilized from multiple stances, including two-point, one-hand, and three-point alignments, while also being trusted with responsibilities beyond simply attacking the quarterback. Northwestern occasionally asked him to work into the flats, contribute on special teams, and play disciplined backside defense against the run. That flexibility gives him value as more than a situational defender.
Saka's game is built more on consistency than flashy traits. He does not possess elite explosiveness or rare bend around the corner, but he also avoids many of the mistakes that take defenders out of plays. He understands leverage, takes proper pursuit angles, and routinely positions himself to eliminate cutback lanes. His spin move serves as a functional counter when offensive tackles overset, though it could become more effective with tighter execution and less wasted movement.
Perhaps the most interesting part of Saka's evaluation is that he still feels somewhat unfinished. The film did not reveal a dominant trait that consistently overwhelms opponents, but it also showed a player with very few glaring weaknesses. He is assignment-sound, versatile, and productive, even if he is not an elite athlete. Texas A&M provides an opportunity for Saka to take the next step in his development and potentially discover the defining trait that elevates him from a solid football player to a legitimate NFL prospect.
