We could be looking at a generational draft class next season, as the 2027 NFL Draft is rich in prospects on both sides of the ball. On defense, the edge rusher position has two heavy hitters at the top, with nice depth behind them.
One of the higher-ranked prospects here is Oregon's Matayo Uiagelelei (oo-ee-UNG-gə-lə-LAY), and he is the focus of this 2027 summer scouting report.
Matayo Uiagalelei has the prototypical build you look for in an edge rusher. His long wingspan allows him to land early on his blocker with firm hands, setting up power moves and also setting the edge. Love that he has kicked down to 5-technique but can also stand up and rush the passer. We saw a much-improved Uiagalelei in 2025 in terms of clean hands and technique, as his timing on cross chops was on display this season. Moves well along the line of scrimmage on run plays.
For me, Uiagalelei projects more as a pure defensive end in the NFL than a stand-up edge rusher. There are concerns about his get off, as he is far from explosive compared to others in this class at his position. That first step appears to be in quicksand, at times. Needs to sharpen his tackling technique, as he almost does not trust himself to run through someone and instead leaps towards them. Leverage is king in the run game, and he allows his pads to float, giving blockers a chance to engage early and win battles.
