There's plenty of optimism in Kent as Roosevelt enters its first football season in the Metro Athletic Conference.
It's easy to understand why. The Rough Riders went 4-1 against the five opponents they played last year and are set to face again in 2026. Roosevelt won games against Cuyahoga Falls, Ellet, Ravenna and Tallmadge a year ago. The only returning foe the Rough Riders didn't beat in 2025? Streetsboro, which went 9-3 last season.
Although the Rough Riders are joining a new conference, they played four of this year's seven MAC opponents in 2025. Roosevelt faced Ravenna and Streetsboro in nonconference games, with the Ravens and Rough Riders playing on an annual basis over many decades. Roosevelt has also played Cuyahoga Falls and Tallmadge on an annual basis, since all three schools came over to the MAC from the Suburban League's American Conference.
The Rough Riders additionally have a rich history against the other three opponents on this year's MAC schedule. Roosevelt faced Field, Norton and Springfield every season from 2005 through 2014 when all four were in the Portage Trail Conference's Metro Division. The Rough Riders went 6-4 against the Falcons during that stretch — and 10-0 against both the Panthers and Spartans. Granted, Norton has reached a different level since.
In nonconference play, Roosevelt faces Ellet once again in Week 3 after topping the Orangemen by 20 points a year ago. The Rough Riders add two new nonleague opponents — Twinsburg (Week 1) and Willoughby South (Week 2). They haven't faced the Tigers since 2004, through they did play a postseason game at Twinsburg Tiger Stadium in 2011, and haven't faced the Rebels in at least half a century.
