The fourth and final men's major of 2026 will be here before you know. But between now and then – July 16-19 to be exact ‒ there are still plenty of spots to be claimed.
The 2026 Open Championship, aka the British Open, according to many American golf fans, will have a field of 156 but as of June 22, there were 112 players on the exempt list, meaning there are 44 spots to be earned. Most of those will be determined on Tuesday, June 30, in 36-hole final qualfying at four locations (three in England, one in Scotland).
The 2026 Open will be at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. This will be the 154th British Open and 11th at Birkdale. Jordan Spieth won in 2017 the last time it was there.
There are five amateurs (as of now) in the field and they'll need to maintain their amateur status. Jackson Koivun, who earned exemption via the Mark H. McCormack Medal as the Men's World Amateur Golf Ranking winner for 2025, turned pro after competing in the U.S. Open, thus forfeiting his spot in the British Open.
Tiger Woods is going to miss the Open. His last round in competition was at the 2024 Open. SI.com reported in May that Woods didn't submit an entry to the 2026 Open.
The official exempt list from the R&A shows Mickelson's name is on there as a past champion but it remains to be seen if he plays. Like Woods, he did not play the Masters, PGA or the U.S. Open this year.
