The Chargers have their starter on the interior of the defensive line.
After missing out on Michigan's Kenneth Grant, who was selected with the No. 13 pick by Miami, Los Angeles had to turn elsewhere to fill the hole left by Poona Ford in free agency. They went offense for their first two picks, taking running back Omarion Hampton and wide receiver Tre Harris.
With a handful of defensive tackles on the board at No. 86 - Ty Robinson, Jordan Phillips, Joshua Farmer, and Jamaree Caldwell among them - the Chargers had a few possible routes to replace Ford. In the end, Los Angeles went with Caldwell, a 332-pound behemoth who will plug up the interior.
Caldwell was the dirty work player on Oregon's defensive line, taking on double teams to free things up for defensive tackle Derrick Harmon (No. 21 to the Steelers) and edge rusher Jordan Burch (No. 79 to the Cardinals) to terrorize opposing quarterbacks. The Chargers will ask him to play a similar role, freeing up Teair Tart, Khalil Mack, and Tuli Tulipulotu to attack as rushers.
With a pick at defensive tackle, Los Angeles has closed up their biggest need on that side of the ball. Tight end still looms as a need, but the Chargers have seven picks on Day 3 to potentially maneuver around the board.
