As Polk County’s high school football teams went through preseason practice, The Ledger spotlighted the top senior prospects, top players at their respective positions and gave a quick breakdown on how their respective district shaped up.

To wrap up preseason coverage, here is a quick team-by-team look, highlighting each team’s top players and what to watch for each team in the county.

The 11-week season — 10 games with a bye week for each team — begins Thursday with Lakeland traveling to Auburndale, while the rest of the county’s teams will play on Friday.

All Saints

Head Coach: Jason Smith (1st year).

Coaching Staff: Al Bellotto, Daryl Frazier, Jerry Fenner, Shawn Finnegan, Hunter Ovens, Chelsea Iglesias (ATC), Mark Dessart (S/ C).

2024 Record: 2-4.

Key Losses: None.

Players to watch: ATH Jackson Waters (5-10, 165, Sr.), RB/OLB Josh Evans (5-9), 155, Sr.), WR/DE Josh Koch (6-6. 190, Jr.), OL/DL Oakley Wright (6-1, 225, Jr.), QB/FS Jayden Watson (5-10, 155, So.), DB/WR Michael Frimpong (6-0, 150, Sr.), WR/DB Robbie Norris (5-9, 145, So.), NT/OL Cam Robinson (5-9, 180, 8th).

Outlook: The Saints are the deepest across the board at every position than they have been since their 2020 State Championship team. Depth will be a strength. The 6-6 Josh Koch will be a big target for new starting quarterback Jayden Watson, and Jackson Waters will be a playmaker at running back, poised to be a 1,000-yard rusher. He also will be the leader on defense at middle linebacker. The offensive line should be the most improved group, and wide receivers should also be a strength. Robbie Norris and newcomer Cal O’Connor will add speed. Defensively, the defensive line will have more depth, speed and strength. Josh Koch, Cam Robinson and Sam Railey will be making plays all over the field. Norris, Michael Frimpong and Josh Evans lead the secondary. All Saints play in the Eight-Man Division in the SSAA with Geneva Classical, Hernando Christian and Oasis Christian. Hernando Christian was the 3A state runner up last season.

Auburndale

Head Coach: Antonio Thomas (2nd year, 6-4).

Coaching Staff: Devone Williams (DC), Gee Parrish (OC), Danny Barnes (QB), Eric Robinson (TE), Lakevin Camp (DB), Jamal Douglas (DL), Lloyd Hughart (Special Teams), Artavis Pierce (RB), Charlie Shaw (OL), Chris Williams (LB).

2024 Record: 6-4.

Key Losses: Cornell Cater, Amari Turner, Arquan Glanton, Anthony Howard.

Players to watch: OL/DL Riley Cooper (6-1, 285, Sr.), DE James Tilus (6-2, 235, Sr.), Jayden Mondesir (5-10, 245, Sr.), RB Charles Calhoun (6-0, 215, DB Jordan Tarver (6-1, 170, Sr.), DB David Bess (5-9, 160, Sr.), WR Cassidy Ervin (5-9, 157, Sr.), Pat Weir (5-9, 165, Jr.), RB Terry Sullivan (5-11, 260, Sr.), WR Darion Jiles (6-0, 180, Sr.).

Offensive Outlook: Junior Gunner Needham and freshman Teo Edwards battled for the starting quarterback job in fall practice, and the Bloodhounds should be solid at that position. Kanarris Cooper, Theo Island, Tyson Lynn, Riley Cooper and Kaharri Reynolds return on the offensive line, which should be a strength. Pat Weir started in the backfield in the Kickoff Classic and had some nice runs before the game was called. Auburndale has a strong wide receiver group, led by Darion Jiles. Defensively, Auburndale is experienced with the front seven returning, led by three-star prospect James Tilus at defensive end.The secondary should be solid with Jordan Tarver and

Outlook: Auburndale are looking to build off of last season and challenge Lake Wales for district runner-up. The Bloodhounds should be improved and be a playoff team even if they are third in the district but are in a tough region that includes district rival Orlando Jones, last year’s state runner-up.

Bartow

[IMG alt="Football Preview - Bartow High School -Josiah White , Ethan Brous ,Carmello Harden and Kendric Stacey Wednesday July 24, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.
Ernst Peters/The Ledger"]https://media.zenfs.com/en/the-ledger/65facb20b1c198ca7bef2db3435cde16[/IMG]

Head Coach: Grady Morrell (1st year, 33-18 overall).

Coaching Staff: Jayvon Young, Micheal Pabon, John Nelson, Terrence Evans, Jamal Johnson, D’Jimon Collins, Jalen Miller, LJ Cummings, Kenny Lewis, Scott Sjoblum, Austin Sharpless, Joe Freeman.

2024 Record: 6-5.

Key Losses: Blake Johnson, Corey Butler, Tavares Murray, Jashod Hampton, Ike Jackson, D’ Coreyon Stanley.

Players to watch: DB Josiah White 6-3, 190, Sr.), Jaziah Battle 6-0, 170, Jr.), DT Carmello Harden 6-1, 270, So.), DE/DT Kendric Stacey 6-1, 240, Sr.), QB Ethan Brous 5-9 170, Sr.), Messiah Borders 5-10, 160, Jr.), Jakobie Terry 5-8, 160, Jr.), WR/DB Major McBath 6-0, 170, Jr.), RB Camden Hall 5-7, 180, Sr.), DB Ladarrian Adams 5-10, 155, Jr.), Jacob Richardson 5-10, 185, So.), Shamarie Callins 5-10, 155, Jr.), OL John Barnes 5-10, 225, Sr.), DE/LB Caleb Bell 6-3, 210, Sr.), TE/DE Carl Thomas 6-2, 190, Sr.).

Outlook: Bartow is rebuilding its offense but has speed and potential playmakers. The key is getting the ball to their playmakers in space. Camden Hall a squatty, downhill runner takes over as the go-to back. The offensive line was a concern at the start of fall practice but has shown tremendous improvement. Behind veterans John Barnes and Levi Peeples. Ethan Brous has big shoes to fill in replacing Blake Johnson as starting quarterback. Defensively, a defensive line led by Carmello Harden, Kendrick Stacey could be a strength. The linebackers have shown a lot of improvement during practice. Josiah White is a Sacramento State-commit and Jaziah Battle, who is receiving offers, lead the secondary. Bartow is looking to make a run at the district title and the key will be how quickly the new players and new head coach and offensive coaches jell.

Davenport

[IMG alt="Football Preview - Davenport High School - Landen Peters , Jonathn Fields and Crystofer Reno Wednesday July 24, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.
Ernst Peters/The Ledger"]https://media.zenfs.com/en/the-ledger/93e24237d8c3da974498155f023f07c4[/IMG]

Head Coach: Ryan Mills (1st year).

2024 Record: 5-5.

Key Losses: Carl Jean-Bart, Brydon Echols, Jayden Parmley.

Players to watch: WR Johnathn Fields (6-0, 170, Sr.), QB Joshua Middleton (6-3, 170, Sr.), RB Daniel Jones (5-10, 180, Jr.), LB Crystofher Reno (5-10, 205, Sr.), LB Cris Silfa (6-0, 225, Sr.), DB Menyelek Johnson (6-4, 170, Sr.).

Offensive Outlook: Quarterback Joshua Middleton and receiver Jonathan Fields have the potential for producing big plays in the passing game. The Broncos have depth at running back. The key will be the offensive line coming together as it is young and inexperienced. Experience on the defensive line and at linebacker is a strength, but depth on the defensive line is a concern. Crystofher Reno and Cris Silfa lead the linebackers. The Broncos return three starters in the secondary. Menyelke Johnson, Bryan Brooks and Sandrak Stgermain all should be key players defensively.

Outlook: Coming off a 5-5 season, Davenport is hoping to take the next step under new coach Ryan Mills, who coached two years at Lake Region. If the offensive line jells and they can avoid injuries on defense, the Broncos could be in position for a playoff berth and a district title.

Discovery

[IMG alt="Football Preview Discovery High School - Terrence Threeths III , Cooper Wyas and Trey Wilbanks Tuesday July 23, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.
Ernst Peters/The Ledger"]https://media.zenfs.com/en/the-ledger/578e778194763db2c986ae937129bef0[/IMG]

Head Coach (Year, career record): Keyonta Townsel (1st year).

Coaching Staff: Bryce Holliday William Jones Sr Quintin Sejour.

2024 Record: 3-7.

Key Losses: CJ Recce.

Players to watch:

QB Cooper Wyas (5-9, 190, Sr.), TE Trey Wilbanks (5-11, 195, So.), OL Easton Browning (6-2, 250, So.), RB Jordan Henderson (5-7, 180, Fr.), DB Terrance Threeths (5-8, 165, Sr.), RB Tice Struble (5-9, 145, Fr.), WR Jyrine Hayzelton (5-10, 170, Sr.), ATH Zion White (5-8, 150, So.).

Outlook: The offensive line is young but could be a strength, especially in the running game with freshman Jordan Henderson in the backfield. Youth on defense is also a concern but team speed could be a defensive strength.

Fort Meade

[IMG alt="Football Preview - Jayden McCutchen , Kamar Gilmartin , Mekhi Berrien , Gabriel Solomon and Ty Monts De Oca- Fort Meade High School Thursday July 31, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.
Ernst Peters/The Ledger"]https://media.zenfs.com/en/the-ledger/d188af90a8daa95d58e3b8410f891861[/IMG]

Coach: Maurice Russell (2nd year, 6-7).

Coaching Staff: Cedric Simmons, Henry Grace, Clinton Cornelius, Eric Grace, Andre Camp, Anthony Russell.

2024 Record: 6-7.

Key Losses: Darian Kirkland, Nasier Berrien, Jeran Jones.

Players to Watch: WR/DB Kamar Gilmartin (5-9, 165), LB Mehki Berrien (5-11, 185, Sr.), WR/DB Omari Russell (6-1,170, Sr.), QB Jayden McCutchen, OL Ty Monts De Oca (6-4, 250, Jr.), WR/LB Gabriel Solomon (6-0, 167, Sr.), WR/LB Jesse Mitchell (6-3, 200).

Outlook: The Miners lost just seven seniors from last year’s team. They finished the season with four straight wins in the rural postseason tournament after going 2-7 in the regular season. Look for a faster start this year. After toying with transferring in the spring, quarterback Jayden McCutchen returned over the summer and leads a potent offense with Omari Russell as the No. 1 receiver. Kamar Gilmartin will be another target and both he and Russell will be key in the secondary. Mehke Berrien is a bit undersized at linebacker but that doesn’t stop him from making plays. He is a fast, strong player and a solid tackler. Mitchell is a transfer from Sebring. He’s big target at receiver and moved from defensive end to linebacker on defense. Junior Ty Monts De Oca has 27 Division I offers and will anchor the offensive line after coming back from a shoulder injury.

Frostproof

[IMG alt="Football Preview - Frostproof High School - Charlie Plain , Mehki Guillaume and Hunter Brantley Friday July 25, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.

Players to watch: QB Mekhi Guillaume, WR/DB Charlie Plain, RB Deshawn Blocker RB, OL/DL Hunter Brantley OL/DL, OL Hayden Starnes.

Outlook: Mekhi Guillaume will be an exciting playmaker at quarterback. A key will be getting the ball into Charlie Plain’s hands. He’s a threat to score any time he gets the ball. Deshawn Blocker will take over at running back. Hunter Brantley leads the offensive line. The Bulldogs have talent, but youth is a concern. Defensively, Brantley and Robey will lead this unit and will be joined by Riley Williamson and Easton Bagwell Nick Lopez Antwain Cobb and Thomas Shields who are improving daily.Frostproof has a competitive schedule and are defending champions in the Sunshine State Athletic Association.

Outlook: The Eagles are rebuilding on offense as they are replacing 11 starters on offense, including quarterback Cam Turner, who threw for 2,500 yards and 30 touchdowns and running back Tre Evans who rushed for more than 1,000 yards and 17 touchdowns. David Soto and Nate Summers were battling in the fall to replace Turner. Kalen Mitchell and Cole Davis are emerging at wide receiver. The biggest challenge is rebuilding the offensive line.Tucker Sheets, Matt Wutsch and Cash Jadwin are expected to be starters. Jenkins has more experience on the defense. Elliot Ortiz, the captaining of the unit, Josiah Grant and Donte Goode having logged a lot of playing time last year. Issac Soto and Cody Woodard have added length and depth up front. The linebackers are headed up by Luke Wolf, Yomar Williamson. Newcomers Dylan King and DJ Hayes will add depth and athleticism. The biggest gains were made in the secondary. Kalen Mitchell, Asir Chappell and Ralph Evans bring experience to a group that also has Jayden Williams and Luke Martindale. The Eagles will need the defense to help lead the team as the rebuilt offense comes together. Jenkins is looking to compete for the district title and make the next step after three .500 seasons.

Haines City

[IMG alt="Football Preview - Haines City High School - Andre Hines , Blake Herrington and Bachon Moore Wednesday July 24, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.

Outlook: After winning its first district title in a quarter century, Haines City was hit hard by players transferring. The Hornets lost key players to Lake Wales, Ridge Community and Lakeland. The Hornets will enter the season with a fresh offensive slate. They return just one starter in Blake Herrington who will split time at quarterback and wide receiver. Defensively, the Hornets will have a true reset as they will take the field with an entirely new cast of starters.

Kathleen

[IMG alt="Football Preview - Kathleen High School - Xavion Mitchell , Marcus Bankston and Rashard Kelly Wednesday July 24, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.

Outlook: The strength is the running game as quarterback Ashton Frazier, who was at Lake Gibson last season, and Xavion Mitchell are both explosive runners.Tyrone Bell and Amari Huggins are battling at wide receiver. The Red Devils have swept at defensive back, which is the strength of the team led by J’Anthoni Hayes and Jayshawn Fredrick. The big concerns are depth at linebacker and defensive line. The Red Devils are in a tough district with Lakeland, Lake Gibson and Sebring and have eight road games this year.

Lake Gibson

[IMG alt="Football Preview - Super 16- Berny Acosta , Elijah Byers and Mason Desandolo - Lake Gibson High School Thursday July 31, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.

Outlook: The strength of the offense is at wide receiver with Derrick McBride Jr. leading the way with Adonis Cuyler. Brian Mapp, a Mulberry transfer, has shown tremendous at running back and will be important on defense. The Braves have to replace Collin Henderson at quarterback and Brayden Padgett and JoJo Chandler have been battling at the position since the spring. The defensive line should be a strength led by Jordan Jenkins and Ely Byers along with linebacker Malichi Moore and Caleb Beck. The secondary is strong with Cason Dash and Jeremiah Epps. Lake Gibson will be hard-pressed to knock off Lakeland in the district. However, if the offensive line and quarterbacks get settled, they should challenge for a playoff spot.

[IMG alt="Football Preview - Jaquarius Lucas , Najeh Miller and Jermaine May - Lake Region High School Thursday July 31, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.

Outlook: The offense gets a boost at running back with the addition of Ja’Quaris Lucas, and Jermaine May is also a playmaker. The Thunder look to be improved defensively too. They will play a 4-2-5 defense to get more of their best players on the field. The Thunder are looking to make a big jump in their second year under King.

Outlook: The Highlanders are loaded with playmakers on offense and have great depth. At wide receiver, Kaneilius Purdy and Gabriel LeGrand are the top two but Ledielle Burno and Claudarius Bell are among the players who will also be important. The running backs are led by Haines City transfer Kamari Smith, Kylor Sanford, Brayden Scott and Dontravius Bell.

Lakeland

[IMG alt="Football Preview - Zephaniah Rogers , Jerry Thomas and Ziggy Riley - Lakeland High School -Wednesday July 30, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.

Ernst Peters/The Ledger"]https://media.zenfs.com/en/the-ledger/af694f794d8318ea934764b6bad887da[/IMG]

Coaching Staff: Kerry Harbin (Asst HC/RB), CJ Johnson (DC/DL), Bill Buldini (LB), Jakelin Chapman (OL), Henderson Taylor (TE), Kelvin Broome (DB), Tariq Young (WR), Paul Schwada (DB), John Bishop (OL).

2024 Record: 13-1.

Key Losses: Shanard Clower, Keon Young, Trent Turner, Zander Smith, Sammy Ettiene, Jermichael Gillis, Kavon McKinney, DJ Jenkins, Jordan Henderson.

Players to watch: LB Malik Morris (Sr.), WR Kelen Hendrix (Jr.), DB CJ Cresser (Sr.), DL Santana Harvey (Jr.), DL Andrew Sapp (Jr.), QB Joaquin Kavouklis (Jr.), RB Jadarious Dobie (Sr.), LB Ziggy Riley (Sr.), DB Jordan Young (Jr.), LB Zephaniah Rogers (Sr.), TE Jasper Hebel (Sr.), WR Cam Fuse (So.), WR Joseph Howard (Jr.), WR Jerry Thomas (Sr.), WR Zyuan Dukes (Sr.), OL Vanshawn Burch (Jr.), OL Jaxson Russell (Fr.), OL Juan Diaz (Sr.), OL Steven Russell (Sr.), DB Deonte Fielder (Jr.), DB Crisean Davis (Sr.), DB Dominic Harris Payne (So.), DL Rashard Mcgee (Sr.), DL Ashtan O’Neal (Sr).

Outlook: The strength of the offense is at running back, led by senior Jadarius Dobie. Joaquin Kavouklis takes over at quarterback. Although Shanard Clower has graduated, the young receivers from last year have more experience. Cam Fuse has tremendous upside, Jerry Thomas is steady. Joseph Howard and Zyuan Dukes give Lakeland multiple playmakers. The key to the offense will be how quickly a new offensive line develops. Defensively, Lakeland has speed had each level. Santana Harvey is a strong pass rusher, Malik Morris, Ziggy Riley and Zephaniah Rogers give Lakeland perhaps the top linebacking corps in the county. Lakeland plays a tough schedule and should be ready for the playoffs. They have to clean up some mental mistakes from the Kickoff Classic but likely won’t see a team as good as Miami Northwestern the rest of the way.

Lakeland Christian

[IMG alt="Football Preview - Lakeland Christian School - Davin Sirmons Jr. , Devonte Howard Jr. and Aaron Phillips Friday July 25, 2025 in Lakeland Fl.

2024 Record: 10-2.

Key Losses: Trey Berry, Ian Goines, Josh Bellamy, Killian O’Neal, Parker Peacock, Mike Pollard, Truman St. John, Lane Hall.

Players to watch: QB Brody Brennaman, RB AJ Truedell, WR DJ Howard, DE Junior Sirmons, DE AJ Phillips, WR Cael Straub.

Outlook: The Vikings should have a prolific passing game. Brenneman, a junior, has two years experience on varsity and has a playmaker in DJ Howard. In the Kickoff Classic, Cael Straub showed he should give Brenneman another solid target on the outside. AJ Truedell is a breakaway threat in the backfield. The key will be rebuilding the offensive line that is replacing four seniors who graduated. The defensive will be built behind defensive ends AJ Phillims and Junior Sirmons. Look for LCS to contend against for the district title.

Key Losses: Cedric Townsend, Nick Williams, Paul Sledge, Lloyd Knight, Laquinton Chandler, Travion Hymes, Collis Rhodes.

Players to watch: OLB/RB Tayron Grant (5-11, 179, Sr.), DE/TE Jayden Johnson (6-1, 210, Sr.), OL/DL Javaris Stewart (6-1, 300, Sr.), OLB/RB Kyron Nicholas (5-11, 166, Sr.), QB Joseph Shannon (6-2, 165, Fr.).

Outlook: The Panthers lost their top playmakers to either transfer or graduation. Three seniors will lead the backfield. Quarterback Joseph Shannon has potential but is just a freshman. Returning starter Javaris Stewart returns to lead the offensive line. Other key players will be Karron Nicols, Jaiden Duvalt, Mason Jones, DJ Tolliver and Kenneth O’Steen. Defensively, the strength is versatility. Josiah Cobbett and Nathan can play both corner and safety. The Panthers also have speed at linebacker. The lack of depth is a concern. In a two-team district, Mulberry has to just beat DeSoto to make the playoffs as district champion.

Outlook: Look for a bounce-back season for Winter Haven. Quarterback Michael Kearney III can make plays with his arm and his feet. Jordan Phillips, the son of basketball assistant coach Jamie Phillips, should make an impact on both sides of the ball. The linebackers should be a strength with Vario McBride and Deshawn Smalls, while defensive back Matwoin Bryant Jr. is one of the top freshman in the county.
