The Grammy's are the best award show on television. Not a lot of puffed up speeches. They do award he biggies on TV, but most are done off-air. The airtime is reserved for what musicians do best, which is to perform. And I love this trend of pairing up older generations with newer musicians for unique collaborations.

And we got to see a Beatles reunion between Paul and Ringo last night. How cool is that?

Whomever came up with this new-ish format over the last years is a frigging genius.

One question though, did CBS get LL Cool J on a multi-year deal? Maybe they'd pay him to host 4 and get the 5th free?

I do too... however, gotta say - Madonna look extremely odd and off last night. And, sad to say but I really wasn't into McCartney's performance - at all...
Ringo's Photograph performance was awesome though!!

I can't sit through these award shows, but I did see some of the edited performances today online and I have to say that Daft Punk with Stevie and Pharrel was fantastic!

McCartney's song was the most "Beatley" song I've heard from him in a while. I actually bought it, despite the live performance being just ok.

I will say that the lack of a real tribute to Lou Reed and cutting off the final performance of NIN, Lindsey Buckingham, Dave Grohl, and Queens of the Stone Age were both big mistakes this year.

They did two different things for Lou Reed

I can only hope that in future decades, we'll be thoroughly embarrassed that most of these were considered contenders for best song/album/performance of the year.

I got the impression that the Jared Leto tribute was not planned. It seemed awkward, like he'd gone off script. And I guess Metallica did collaborate with him, so maybe their rendition of "One" was for him, but I hope not. It is about a suffering man begging to die, after all.

And he was in the "In Memoriam" montage, but if a frigging Everly Brother gets his own obviously-planned song, I think Lou Reed should've too.

I did tune in a little late. Did they do something for him at the beginning?

thanks for posting this.

I had no idea that zepplin had a new album or that grohl and mccartney wrote a song together. I want to hear both right away.

And "radioactive" is rock? I wonder why they dont play it on rock stations. :)

Yes. It is on my Alt Rock station all the time. Of course, so was Lorde and she is considered "Pop". Lots of shifting genre lines these days.

It wasn't that long ago that Jethro Tull beat out Metallica for Hard Rock/Heavy Metal.

Well, their 'new' album was a live show from 2007...

Glad to see Black Sabbath finally win a Grammy though.

Eh. Alt rock? Is that what they call alternative now?

My daughter and wife do not listen to rock music.
They do listen to lord and radioactive.

JMHO that is not rock.

But that is why I was never a grammy awards guy. Being a Metal and rock type of guy, they do not do a good job of recognising what was true in the genre.

Game. Set. Match.

Lorde was on ALT NATION (the Sirius station) months and months before she popped up on pop and top 40 stations. I remember when I heard her for the first time, I was very confused as to why she was on my radio. But there seems to be more of that bleeding between genres every day.

Alt now has sub-genres and eras (doesn't that make you feel old?):
Classic Alternative (Pre-Nirvana)
Grunge and 90's Alternative
And then whatever they are calling the stuff coming out today:

"Contemporary" Alt seems to be all-encompassing. You get everything from Lorde to Mumford and Sons, Imagine Dragons to The xx. Arctic Monkeys to Vampire Weekend. Stuff that sounds like 80's pop to stuff that sounds like 80's hair metal. Just a really weird mix, for sure.
