No. 25 Texas A&M is 2-0 to start the 2026 season after defeating Tennessee Tech by a combined 38- 13 in the first two games of the Opening Weekend series, led by 33 hits and nearly double-digit home runs, including star outfielder Caden Sorrell's three homers, combined with Baylor transfer DH Wesley Jordan's two home runs to start off his Aggie career.
While the more experienced players, especially transfer Chris Hacopian, are making an immediate impact, second-year coach Michael Earley opted to start freshmen Nico Partida and Boston Kellner, and through two games, both players look the part, especially the Arizona native, who has recorded four hits and a team-leading four doubles, producing three RBI to start the season.
Suiting up and starting in the SEC as a freshman is a big deal, and thanks to several Texas A&M reporters, including KBTX's Travis Brown, Kellner's parents drove over 20 hours to watch their son play, which must have been one of the more exciting moments after years of driving him to practice.
One of Earley's top commits, Kellner was named USA's 2024 National High School Underclass Player of the Year, and was considered a candidate to earn a starting infield spot at either shortstop or second base. After hiring Cliff Pennington to coach the infield, Kellner and Partida's starting futures were set in stone.
Nico Partida, who was highly regarded as an elite pitching prospect, was equally dangerous at the plate and was one of the better athletes coming into the program. Ranked as the 144th-ranked prospect in the 2025 MLB Draft, Partida withdrew his name and opted to play for Michael Earley, starting his career at third base due to Kellner's natural fit at shortstop. Through two games, Partida hit his first career home run on Friday night.
Standing 6'0" and over 200 pounds, Kellner is plenty powerful after hitting 29 home runs and hitting over .400 during his high school career, but his patience at the plate, focused on hits rather than homers, pairs well with Caden Sorrell and Gavin Grahovac, who have the ability to knock the ball out of the park at any time.
For Texas A&M to get back to the NCAA Tournament after missing the postseason for the first time in nearly 20 seasons, Kellner and Partida will have moments of struggle, and if the hits aren't coming, I don't expect their defensive performances to derail. So far, so good.
