With the Denver Broncos kicking off training camp this week, we published an updated 53-man roster prediction on Monday. It was, as always, a difficult exercise.
Among the hardest cuts were running backs Jaleel McLaughlin and Tyler Badie. Our initial projection has just three running backs on the active roster. It wouldn't be surprising to see the team actually carry four, but with numbers tight at other positions, we went with three RBs. Badie could probably return on the practice squad, but McLaughlin might want a fresh start elsewhere if he doesn't make the 53-man squad.
It was also tough to cut offensive linemen Calvin Throckmorton, Matt Peart and Nick Gargiulo, but with nine offensive linemen in good position, it's hard to find room for those veterans.
On defense, our initial projection has four safeties, with no room for Tycen Anderson or JL Skinner. It wouldn't be surprising to see either of them make the actual roster next month.
After preseason, the Broncos will have until Aug. 30 to finalize an initial 53-man roster. After that, clubs will make waiver claims on Aug. 31 before building 16- or 17-player practice squads. Our active roster prediction will undoubtedly change in the coming weeks, but this early projection has these players on the outside looking in.
