The Detroit Lions turned Friday’s training camp practice into something resembling a scrimmage.

A sizable portion of the roster watched instead.

According to Pride of Detroit, 14 Lions players did not practice Friday, including several notable starters and key contributors. With Dan Campbell not scheduled to speak with reporters Friday, the reasons behind several of the new absences remain unknown for now.

Among the most notable players sidelined were Teddy Bridgewater, Isiah Pacheco, Juice Scruggs, Mekhi Wingo, Aidan Keanaaina and D.J. Reed.

Several New Absences Surface

Detroit already entered Friday managing a number of known injuries.

Sione Vaki remains sidelined after suffering a broken nose and eye issue. Derrick Moore continues dealing with a groin injury, Payton Turner has a back issue, Malcolm Rodriguez is recovering from an ankle injury and rookie Jimmy Rolder remains out with a leg injury.

Kerby Joseph remains on the PUP list because of his knee, while Brian Branch continues his recovery from a torn Achilles. Giovanni Manu also remains on the NFI list.

Friday brought several additional names with no publicly disclosed injury.

Bridgewater did not practice, leaving Detroit without its veteran backup quarterback during the scrimmage-style session.

Pacheco was also absent after drawing rave reviews throughout the early portion of camp for his physical running style.

Scruggs, Keanaaina and starting cornerback Reed were sidelined for undisclosed reasons as well.

Mekhi Wingo Dealing With Groin Injury

One absence does come with a known designation.

Defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo was sidelined by a groin injury, another development worth monitoring for a Detroit defensive front that has already dealt with several interruptions during camp.

The Lions recently added veteran defensive lineman Ben Stille, giving them another body for practices while the position group works through its current availability issues.

How serious Wingo’s injury might be is not yet known.’

No Immediate Answers From Campbell

The frustrating part for Lions fans is that several of Friday’s absences cannot yet be explained.

Without a Campbell media session following practice, there is no indication whether Bridgewater, Pacheco, Scruggs, Keanaaina or Reed are dealing with injuries, receiving maintenance days or sitting for another reason.

That distinction matters.

Training camp naturally produces missed practices, especially once padded work intensifies. An undisclosed absence on one afternoon does not automatically signal a significant problem.

Until Campbell provides an update, speculation should remain exactly that.

Bottom Line

The Detroit Lions were missing 14 players during Friday’s scrimmage-style practice, including several new and notable absences.

The biggest names to watch are D.J. Reed and Isiah Pacheco, while Teddy Bridgewater, Juice Scruggs and Aidan Keanaaina also sat out for undisclosed reasons. Mekhi Wingo was listed with a groin injury.

For now, Detroit has more questions than answers.

Campbell’s next injury update suddenly carries quite a bit more importance.
