The Kansas City Royals were defeated 5-2 by the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday. While it was another difficult game for a Royals ball club that continues to struggle, reliever Daniel Lynch IV continued his strong season. He is establishing himself as an intriguing trade candidate. He threw another scoreless inning on Thursday.

Lynch began his career as a starter with Kansas City. He struggled, however. After underperforming as a starter early in his career, Lynch began to work out of the bullpen on a consistent basis.

2025 was his first full season as a reliever, as he appeared in 57 games and only two outings were starts. Lynch turned in a 3.06 ERA, and it had become clear that the left-handed pitcher was a reliable relief hurler.

Lynch has been even better so far during the 2026 campaign. The southpaw currently holds a 2.57 ERA across 36 total outings. He also has 31 strikeouts in his 35 innings of work on the mound.

The Royals' bullpen is not the best in baseball, but Lynch has been one of the better left-handed relievers in the game. So, will the Royals trade him?

Will Royals Trade Daniel Lynch IV Before Deadline?

In all reality, Kansas City does not have any urgency to move the 29-year-old this season. He is under team control through 2028. However, Lynch's trade value is quite high right now. Talented and especially reliable left-handed relief pitchers always draw plenty of interest at the trade deadline.

The Royals would be smart to at least listen to offers for Lynch. Additionally, Kansas City is likely going to make veteran starting pitchers such as Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo available for trades. They could package a deal that includes Lynch, which would lead to even more prospects being sent to Kansas City in a potential trade.

Of course, Kansas City could decide to hold onto Lynch as well. They may decide that he is a piece to the puzzle in their bullpen that they want for years to come. It would be a different situation if he was set to enter free agency after the year, but his multiple years of team control provide the Royals with options.

Only time will tell if Daniel Lynch IV ends up being traded. Either way, he is having a tremendous season. The way Lynch has turned his big league career around is impressive.
