The Blues failed to respond after their defeat to PSG as they slumped to a 1-0 loss in one of their worst displays of the season.
Anthony Gordon scored the only goal of the game in the first half, as Chelsea’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League suffered a major blow.
Liam Rosenior admits tactical issue against Newcastle
Rosenior made two changes to the side which lost to PSG with Alejandro Garancho and Robert Sanchez coming in.
However, once again the Blues were exposed defensively with ease as one pass broke through the backline allowing Newcastle to score an easy goal.
Jamie Redknapp slammed Wesley Fofana for his role in the goal, with Rosenior opting to deploy a man for man press.
The press simply didn’t work, and after the game the 41-year-old admitted a tactical issue was to blame for Gordon’s goal.
“Yeah, there’s a tactical issue,” he told his post match press conference.
“We press in a different way to most teams. It’s a new way of pressing. We don’t step on the press and we don’t cover in a position that we should have done.
“Mistakes happen. They had nothing. They had nothing in the game and we gave them a goal.
“We talk about the press. I think the press was the reason Newcastle had to kick long balls back to us and we controlled the game.”
Chelsea lose ground in Champions League race
A win would have seen Chelsea gain ground on either Manchester United and Aston Villa, or both given the two sides play each other on Sunday afternoon.
