New York Liberty guard Betnijah Laney-Hamilton’s role has diminished over the past couple of years. In the 2026 WNBA season, Laney-Hamilton is averaging only 16.8 minutes per game, down from the 30-plus minutes she previously logged. This comes after Laney-Hamilton missed the entirety of the 2025 campaign due to an acute left knee meniscus tear that she suffered during the offseason. On Thursday, the Liberty announced that they were waiving Laney-Hamilton. According to Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb, it was a difficult decision as Laney-Hamilton played a significant role in New York’s 2024 WNBA title run, in which they topped the Minnesota Lynx 3-2. Nevertheless, Laney-Hamilton can now carve out a new role on a team that picks her up.

WNBA fans and spectators wondered why Laney-Hamilton was not traded by the Liberty instead of letting her go for nothing.

“But he didn’t even trade her to give her a chance just waived her for nothing. Unbelievable,” one fan said.

“So why not trade her?” another fan shared.

Other users all over X/Twitter are shocked by the news, especially since Laney-Hamilton was a part of the Liberty’s 2024 WNBA championship run.

Before her absence during the 2025 season, Laney-Hamilton averaged 11.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.1 steals in 30.3 minutes per contest in 2024. She also started in 25 of the 28 games she played that year. Since she has been struggling to get consistent minutes this season, a fresh start may just be what Laney-Hamilton needs to recapture her groove.

New York Liberty GM Jonathan Kolb asserts that Betnijah Laney-Hamilton’s legacy is cemented with the team

Betnijah-Laney Hamilton was a key piece in the New York Liberty’s 2024 WNBA championship run. As a solid starter, the former Rutgers Scarlet Knights standout made her presence most known in Game 3 of the 2024 WNBA Finals when she dropped 20 points to lead her team to an 80-66 victory.

“While this decision is incredibly difficult, we believe this will give Betnijah the best opportunity to pursue a larger basketball role. We wish her nothing but success moving forward, and she’ll always be a member of the Liberty family. As a key contributor to the first championship in franchise history, Betnijah’s legacy with the Liberty is forever cemented,” Kolb was quoted as saying.

Laney-Hamilton now seeks a new team as she has seen her averages fall to 4.7 ppg, 1.9 rpg and 1.5 apg in just 16.8 mpg.
