“Not many people can say they’ve scored at a World Cup,” Auston Trusty

Auston Trusty on his hectic summer, in a professional, personal and political sense, plus looking forward to playing on new Rugby Park surface tomorrow afternoon…​

While most of his team mates were enjoying a relaxing summer, Celtic centre-back Auston Trusty had a particularly hectic summer. Trusty was called up to the United States squad for the recent World Cup finals, and even scored for his country as they reached the last 16, before being eliminated by Belgium.

The Celtic central defender returned to Glasgow under two weeks ago, and was thrown straight into action against Dundee on the Flag Night opener on Monday due to the suspension of Liam Scales.

Auston Trusty on his father’s recent illness​

The reason for the former Arsenal and Sheffield United man’s late arrival was due having being given some extra time off due to a personal situation with Auston having to be with his father Walt, who had taken ill. Now he’s back and on Monday night picked up where he left off with an excellent performance alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers in Celtic’s 1-0 victory.

Auston Trusty spoke to the mainstream media yesterday afternoon ahead of tomorrow’s trip Rugby Park to take on Kilmarnock in Celtic’s first away match of the new season. The big American defender had plenty to say.

Trusty on being back at Celtic: “It’s good to see all the guys and just the banter”​

On being back at Lennoxtown, Trusty said: “It’s good to see all the guys and just the banter,”said Trusty at yesterday’s media conference.

“After last season’s win, everyone just kind of dispersed after the game. So it’s just good to come back and see all the guys and reminisce.

“When I got home [after his World Cup campaign ended], unfortunately, my dad was in a really serious health situation. So I literally landed and I had to go see him first thing. So I didn’t really get too much of a moment to take it in across my whole off-season.

“That’s why I had extra time. I still haven’t done it yet. I really need to, just because one, the Celtic season we had and to finish in that fashion.

Trusty’s delight at scoring at the World Cup for USA​

“But also to get called into the World Cup, make the World Cup team, start and then score a World Cup goal. Not many people can say they’ve scored at a World Cup, especially a centre-back!

“Those are dreams come true. It’s such an amazing period, so I really have to do it because that’s what football is all about. But I will, I will.”

Trusty and his international teammates were also caught up in a bizarre political row when states star striker Folarin Balogun was permitted to play against the Belgians after a red card in the previous round. Not that it mattered in the end as the USA lost 4-1 to Belgium.

“Yeah, it was interesting, but at the same time it’s not really worth me answering just because like it’s so political,” said Trusty when asked about his view on it all.

“My thoughts don’t really matter in the sense of it. I’m not Trump. I’m not Infantino. I’m not Balogun. I have nothing to really do with it. He was just my teammate that got let back on, so yeah, there’s not really an answer for me to really say.”

Trusty was more forthcoming on the issue to playing on Kilmarnock’s much publicised new grass pitch, rather than their infamous hazardous synthetic surface which was ripped up in the summer, and the big American welcomed the move.

“Great news,” Auston Trusty quipped. “I think historically, any team that really goes there, the one thing you think about…’okay, we’re going to play on this pitch.’

“I think a lot of players prefer to play on a grass pitch. Well, a good grass pitch and then a grass pitch and then at least a good turf pitch and then talk about their pitch, that was probably a little over tiered.

“But it’s good that they’re back. It’s good that they changed the surface,” Trusty stated. “I think any team that went there in the past, you’re thinking, ‘Oh, they’ve got to play on this pitch today.’

“Obviously, you grind the wins and you have success there. But having a nice pitch there to actually play some good football, have the potential to play good football, that’s positive.”

Auston Trusty added: “I think it’s more on us. I think we just need to play our game and do our thing. We’ve got to look inwards and play the Celtic way and play our game that kind of takes care of itself.’

“Obviously, we have good players and a good team, but we can’t take them lightly, though we’ve got to look inwards.”
