Sophie Cunningham’s stance on transgender athletes in women’s sport has overshadowed the WNBA recently.
The Indiana Fever star was already a big name in the United States, as she plays alongside Caitlin Clark but also models and podcasts.
She has now become a controversial figure for saying that transgender athletes should compete against biological women.
While many have criticised Cunningham’s take, tennis legend Martina Navratilova has defended her on social media.

What Martina Navratilova said in defence of Sophie Cunningham
The Telegraph recently published a story describing Sophie Cunningham as “basketball’s new anti-trans MAGA poster girl”.
Martina Navratilova saw the article online and corrected the newspaper with her interpretation of Cunningham’s message.
Navratilova tweeted: “Sophie is not anti-trans- rather, she is pro-women! Wrong headline!”
The nine-time Wimbledon champion is very vocal on political issues, and she has taken issue with the criticism of Cunningham.
Many other celebrities will agree with the Indiana Fever guard’s stance but feel they should not say anything.
Meanwhile, Cunningham and Navratilova also have plenty of opposition, including former USWNT player Megan Rapinoe.
