TAMPA — The Tampa Bay Rays’ game notes include a tidbit titled, “Boom Box.” It notes there have been 31 homers hit in the first 12 games at the Rays’ temporary home, George M. Steinbrenner Field. There have been 26 homers hit here over the past six games (4.3 per game).
Tampa Bay is playing here at the Yankees’ spring training home during the 2025 season while Tropicana Field is being repaired. Hurricane Milton caused $55.7 million of damage to Tropicana Field, per the Associated Press.
“Obviously we have no idea how it’s going to play. We hear stories about it,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said here Monday, hinting at the way the ball flies out of here. “But we just gotta show up and try to win the series.”
The Red Sox’ Wally home run head was sitting in the visitors clubhouse waiting to be used before the first game of Boston and Tampa’s three-game series Monday. But how many times will it be used?
The Red Sox are tied for 21st in the majors in home runs with just 12 in 17 games.
Boston is sixth in the majors in runs with 77 but 40.2% of those runs came in two games against the Cardinals. So Boston has scored 46 runs in its other 15 games, an average of just 3.1 runs per game.
Is this the perfect place for Boston’s offense to break out?
“Obviously facing a tough pitching staff, it’s hard to do,” Cora said. “But we feel like we are a capable team offensively. So hopefully we can hit a few balls in the air and start having fun again.”
Cora said the ballpark renovations were done well.
“We like it. They did a good job,” he said. “The cage, especially. We saw it during spring training. They did an amazing job. Very spacious. The weight room is good. It’s a good facility.”
