Quarterback wasn’t a big need for the New England Patriots in the 2025 NFL Draft. But even they couldn’t miss the drama surrounding Shedeur Sanders.

The Colorado quarterback is at the center of the biggest story in this year’s draft. Sanders was projected to go as high as early Round 1. But after two days, Sanders is still on the board.

Patriots executive vice president of football operations Eliot Wolf said he was surprised to see that Sanders didn’t go in the first three rounds.

“It’s surprising,” Wolf said. “We evaluated him. I had the opportunity to watch him play against Oklahoma State this year and they killed Oklahoma State. So maybe it wasn’t the best game to look at.”

We’ve now seen 102 picks come and go without Sanders’ name being called. In the meantime, we’ve seen five quarterbacks come off the board.

Cam Ward at No. 1 was to be expected. Jaxson Dart also going in Round 1 was also considered a possibility.

But seeing Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe and Dillon Gabriel all come off the board before Sanders has been a major headscratcher.

In particular, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper has spent Thursday and Friday nights ranting about how Sanders’ fall is inexplicable.

Wolf was also surprised, but things the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders will find a home on Day 3.

“But it was interesting to see that he’s still available and I’m sure there’s going to be a fit for him here tomorrow,” Wolf said.

The idea of the Patriots taking Sanders in the draft would have been absurd a few days ago. But after trading Joe Milton, New England could be in a position to draft a young quarterback late.

If Sanders falls far enough, would the team consider it? At this point, anything seems possible.
