Donald Trump, JD Vance Pride Hat
June is Pride Month throughout the United States in celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. As a result, the vast majority of teams throughout Major League Baseball hold Pride celebrations at their ballparks, with the Texas Rangers as the one notable exception.
This week, the San Francisco Giants hosted their Pride Night celebration in their ballpark, complete with special Pride hats complete with the team logo in rainbow colors. However, several players sparked controversy when they wrote Bible verses on the Pride hats in an apparent protest.
Now, Vice President JD Vance is weighing in.
Players Write Bible Verses
Giants pitcher Landen Roupp was one of the players to write a Bible verse on his hat. The starter went 4.2 innings with “Gen 9:12-16” written on the front of his cap. After the game, Roupp said that it was done out of “hate” for the LGBTQIA+ community.
“There’s no hate at all. It’s just what I stand for, and what I stand on: I believe in God,” Roupp said after losing to the Chicago Cubs 5-1.
“It’s just about God’s covenant and a promise that he makes to us that, you know, his faithfulness and his mercy. That’s just kind of something I believe in, and I stand firm in that,” he added. “And I’m thankful we live in a country where, you know, we have the freedom to believe what we want, and express what we want.”
Roupp was joined by relievers JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker in writing a Bible verse on their Pride hat. Sam Hentges, meanwhile, decided not to wear the Pride cap at all and instead wore the team’s standard cap.
“It’s just something that I feel like I was forced to support when I don’t morally support it. There wasn’t hatred behind it. I think that’s kind of something that’s misinterpreted,” Hentges said after the game. “I don’t hate the LGBTQ community. It’s just something I believed and talked with teammates and family, and they supported it.”
Giants Reaffirm Their Commitment to Inclusivity
Despite the actions of the players, the Giants issued a statement where the team acknowledged the “pain and anger” the players caused and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
“The San Francisco Giants are proud to support Pride Night and the LGBTQ+ community. Baseball should be a place where everyone feels welcome, respected, and valued. We also respect that individuals may make personal choices about participating in team activations,” the Giants wrote in a statement.
“We understand that the choices by individual players have caused pain and anger to many in the LGBTQ+ community and we are sorry for that. Those choices do not change our organization’s commitment to inclusion, belonging, and creating a welcoming environment for all. We remain grateful to our fans, partners, employees, players, and coaches who help make Pride Night a meaningful celebration.”
JD Vance: ‘Trump Won’
Regardless of their intent, Major League Baseball issued a warning to the Giants players, warning that the writing on the cap violated the league’s rules.
“The writing on the cap violates our rules, and consistent with normal practice, we have warned the players about future violations,” MLB chief communications officer Pat Courtney said in a statement via ESPN.
Following this warning from the league, Vice President JD Vance weighed in on social media, seemingly arguing that since Donald Trump was the President of the United States, MLB should not be enforcing its rules.
“Trump won we don’t have to do this anymore,” Vance wrote in a post on X.
Vance did not elaborate further, and neither Trump nor the White House has issued a comment on their end.
