The Spanish press did not hold back in their scathing reporting of Real Madrid’s defeat by Arsenal
Real Madrid faced headlines of “humiliated” as they returned home to damning write-ups from the Spanish press after their 3-0 humbling by Arsenal.
However, while condemning the likes of Kylian Mbappe for being as “grey as his shirt”, journalists refused to rule out a “miracle” for Carlo Ancelotti’s team in the second leg.
On one of Arsenal’s greatest European nights, Declan Rice scored two breathtaking free-kicks to help secure a commanding lead in their quarter-final.
Mundo Deportivo had been the most critical of the Spanish papers, with its front page on Wednesday picturing one of Rice’s free-kicks, with the headline “Humillados” (Humiliated).

Other outlets carried images of a dejected Jude Bellingham, with Sport running the headline “Tocadisimos”, which translates as “we played”.

AS’ headline was “Obligado A Otro Milagro” [bound to another miracle], while Marca splashed “Humillados Pero... Para El Madrid No Hay Imposibles” [Humiliated but... for Madrid nothing is impossible].

Marca was nevertheless scathing on its inside pages, branding the match a “debacle”, pointing out the team had been “abdicated in the same place where they were crowned champions just under a year ago”.
Rice had opened the scoring at the Emirates with the first direct free-kick of his career on 58 minutes before landing a second 12 minutes later. Mikel Merino scored the third with 75 minutes gone as Arsenal took a major step towards the Champions League semi-finals ahead of next week’s return leg at the Bernabeu.
Amid scenes of disbelief in Spain, Marca turned on some of Real’s glittering stars. “Vinicius, Mbappe, and Rodrygo showed no signs of life,” one article said. “Without threatening, Madrid was a toy in the hands of an Arsenal side that battered them from start to finish.” Ancelotti, Marca added, had a “nightmare” in the technical area. “The captain didn’t jump ship, but he let it sink.”
Mbappe, meanwhile, was described as “failing and ineffective” and “as grey as the jersey he wore”.
The Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, meanwhile, labelled the match a “historic debacle” and “a tragedy in London”.
