Germany was extremely lackluster in its 2-1 loss to Ecuador to close out the group stage.
While the loss meant exactly nothing in the standings, it could have hurt the team in other ways such as with chemistry, consistency, confidence, or even just good vibes.
Afterward, head coach Julian Nagelsmann said that there was not enough structure, nor enough patience on the field from his team.
“We have to learn that after a good start and an early lead, we can play with more composure instead of suddenly switching positions too much. There was too much ‘freestyle’. We just need to be more patient and stay a bit more structured in our positions. And if on top of that we’re giving the ball away too often, at some point it becomes difficult,” said Nagelsmann (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
The problems in Germany’s attack might extend a little more than the boys getting too loose on the pitch. Roles are blurry and there is a lack of a consistent scoring threat amount the starting four players.
Maybe, Nagelsmann will explore ways to figure out how to best maximize the talent on the roster before the squad freestyles its way out of the World Cup.
