The Dallas Cowboys head into the 2026 season with sky-high expectations, as always is the case for America’s Team. Despite the Cowboys coming off a porous season in 2025, finishing 7-9-1, the improvements they made this offseason have them as a popular pick to rebound. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer enters Year 2 and will have to show much better results to keep himself off the hot seat.

The Cowboys have not missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since 2019 and 2020. Schottenheimer has no plans for that to happen in his first two seasons as a head coach. He recently spoke about his expectations for his team, and one clear goal is in mind.

Why Brian Schottenheimer Expects More Wins for the Cowboys in 2026

One of the biggest changes the Cowboys made this offseason was hiring new defensive coordinator Christian Parker. He takes over for Matt Eberflus, who was a disaster last season, leading a Cowboys defense that ranked last in the NFL.

Dallas needed to revamp its personnel and coaching, and it did. The Cowboys’ coaching staff and players seem to be carrying themselves with a new confidence heading into 2026, and Schottenheimer was asked what he needs to improve in his second year as head coach.

According to ESPN, Schottenheimer said, “I mean, it’s obviously going to start with more wins, getting the culture to continue to grow. Like I said, I think in one of the deals this year, the culture has been really fun to create because you’ve got a lot of new faces.”

Schottenheimer is big on building a winner culture, and the only way for that to happen is by winning games. There was no question the Cowboys needed to add better players, especially on defense, and they feel they did that.

Trading for Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers should help their defensive front, and selecting Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence in the first round of the NFL Draft should provide immediate contributors on defense.

As for the offense, we know they are explosive and will score plenty of points. According to PFSN, the Cowboys had an Offense Impact Score of 84.8, which ranked sixth in the NFL. As long as Dak Prescott is under center, the Cowboys have one of the best offenses in the NFL.

Also, it is great to see that wide receiver George Pickens plans to play on the franchise tag and not hold out this offseason. Pickens and CeeDee Lamb give Dallas one of the best wide receiver tandems in football and only raise their ceiling as a team.

While the Cowboys may not be in the top tier of Super Bowl contenders entering the season, they should be much improved and a team certainly capable of improving on their seven wins from a season ago.
