‘Sooner rather than later’ – Phil Parkinson issues Wrexham transfer update ahead of Championship opener

Wrexham are set to face Cardiff City in their first Championship game of the 2026/27 season this coming Monday.

Ahead of the new league season starting, the Dragons have so far added two first-team players to their squad.

Danny Imray joined from Crystal Palace and made his competitive debut against Middlesbrough in the Carabao Cup last week, while Ben Whiteman has moved to the Racecourse Ground from Preston North End.

So far, it has been a pretty quiet window for Wrexham compared to last summer, but Phil Parkinson is still hopeful that more additions will be made ‘sooner rather than later’.

Phil Parkinson is hopeful of adding quality to Wrexham’s squad soon​

As per Leader Live, he said: “We’re working on a few things, and as I’ve stressed all along, we’ve got a decent squad where we’ve made a lot of changes last year.

“But of course, like any manager, we still feel we’re a bit short of where we need to be now and we’re working very hard towards that.

“I’m very pleased with the two lads we brought in and hopefully, sooner rather than later, we’ll be adding a bit more quality to the group.”

On why it can take a long time for players to be signed, he added: “As I’ve explained many times, there’s so many circumstances which can dictate that.

“But we’re working hard as ever behind the scenes and I don’t think we’ve ever been a club who have been shy of making signings when the right players come available.”

Exactly who Wrexham will sign before the transfer deadline at the beginning of September remains to be seen, but they have recently been linked with a move for Joe Gelhardt of Leeds United.

A fee of £4.5m has been mooted for the forward, who won promotion from the Championship while on loan at Hull City last season.
