J.J. Watt has finally addressed his role with CBS Sports in the absence of Tony Romo ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
Romo is on indefinite leave following his arrest last month on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was expected to continue as the lead game analyst alongside Jim Nantz this season.
Having previously been on the second broadcast team, Watt has now been promoted to the lead crew to fill the void.

Watt remained respectful toward Romo’s ongoing situation while admitting that he is “incredibly excited” about the promotion.
The former Houston Texans defensive end will work alongside Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson in his new role.
Watt explained on social media: “ haven’t said much because it’s not the circumstances you’d hope it would happen under…
“But I’m incredibly excited about this opportunity and look forward to working with a legendary team in Jim Nantz, Tracy Wolfson, Jim Rikhoff and the entire CBS lead crew. See you in Minnesota!”
Watt also posted a picture of him studying for the Green Bay Packers’ opening game against the Minnesota Vikings.
The other marquee games on CBS’s busy schedule include the Rio game between the Cowboys and the Baltimore Ravens.
