CBS plans to use another former NFL star during games this upcoming season alongside Jim Nantz after Tony Romo’s recent OWI arrest.
The sports media personality faces another challenge after his Wisconsin arrest went viral recently. However, CBS is now making accommodations to temporarily replace Romo as his situation unfolds further.

The network reveals that Romo is on leave “until further notice.” That leaves CBS in a position to call up former Houston Texans star J.J. Watt to step in and call games with Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.
Romo, 46, was arrested July 23 and booked after operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The former Dallas Cowboys star was in the Midwest competing at the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament.

It’s unclear what Romo’s future at CBS looks like based on a variety of factors that CBS now needs to address. First, his arrest has been extremely public and the longer that situation unfolds the more trouble it can cause the network.
Meanwhile, Romo is still one of the highest-paid on-air personalities in sports media. CBS handed him a 10-year, $180 million contract in 2020, which leaves them financially tied to him for years to come.

The benefit for CBS in the midst of their tough situation is that Watt has proven to be a consummate professional. Watt joins the lead broadcast team in a temporary capacity after teaming up with Ian Eagle last season.
The longtime NFL pass rusher joined CBS as a studio analyst before expanding into gameday coverage. He’s quickly adapted and become a fan favorite with his game insights and fun personality.

It’s unclear at this point how long Romo’s leave will last, but it does make for an interesting few weeks heading into the 2026 NFL season. CBS will begin to broadcast preseason games on August 13 before the regular season kicks off less than a month later.
