‘Only the Tip of the Iceberg’ — NBA World Reacts As Malik Beasley Is Indicted on Federal Charges for Gambling

Former NBA guard Malik Beasley was indicted on federal charges related to sports gambling on Monday, June 29. The charge comes after a year-long investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

Beasley, who spent nine years in the NBA before losing his deal with the Detroit Pistons as a result of the investigation, becomes the latest basketball player to be charged by federal prosecutors as part of a large-scale investigation into illegal sports gambling.

Former Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter, ex-Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, and former NBA coach Damon Jones are among the others who have been indicted by federal prosecutors as part of the investigation. In addition, 11-year NBA veteran Ed Davis has also been indicted.

NBA insider Shams Charania revealed on Monday that the charges related to sports betting schemes like point shaving and prop bets. He added that the government was coordinating a voluntary surrender with Beasley’s representatives.

The NBA world shared its shock at the news, with analyst Nekias Duncan sharing a one-word reaction.

“Gracious,” he wrote.

Dan Greenberg of Barstool Sports pointed out how this was a rough look for the NBA. “Not great,” he wrote.

A Raptors content creator joked about the continued influence of gambling companies in the NBA amid this wide-scale investigation. “Brought to you by FanDuel,” he wrote.

NBA writer Adam Gretz predicted that this could well be the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to links between the NBA and gambling.

“I feel like what we’ve actually seen related to things like this is probably only the tip of the iceberg,” he wrote.

Basketball podcaster Erika Day lamented how little seriousness professional sports leagues show towards addressing issues of domestic violence compared to gambling.

“If professional sports leagues took DV as seriously as they take gambling, we’d be in a much better place,” she wrote.

Beasley last played in the NBA during the 2024-25 season, averaging 16.3 points per game in 82 appearances for the Pistons.

Full details on the charges Beasley is facing have not yet been released. Beasley was drafted into the NBA in 2016 as the 19th pick by the Denver Nuggets. He also played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Milwaukee Bucks during his NBA career.
