The Indiana Fever is hitting its stride going into the WNBA’s All-Star Weekend. Indiana has won five games in a row, behind some stellar play from star guards Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, to improve to 17-10 going into the break.
Unfortunately, as great as things are going for Indiana on the court, a lot of the discourse surrounding the team has centered on a lesser-known player. Sophie Cunningham, who does not start for the Fever, recently addressed one of the country’s most hot-button topics: the role of transgender youth in sports.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,'” she told ESPN. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
Unsurprisingly, Cunningham faced tons of backlash for her comments, but she refused to apologize.
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham said per The Athletic. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”

Fans on social media are incensed with Cunningham and concerned about the vulnerable trans youth her comments will affect negatively.
“Implying that trans people are a danger to children is absolutely unacceptable and anyone who’s defending sophie cunningham right now knows what they’re doing. the number of people in this society who openly despise trans people makes me sick,” one fan wrote on X.
“What a truly shameful thing to say because if you aren’t protecting trans children then you aren’t protecting children. you are actively harming children by demonizing and marginalizing trans children,” someone else added.
“Sophie Cunningham has to be suspended today,” another fan added.
Hopefully, it doesn’t take a suspension for Cunningham to realize the damage that she is doing to an extremely small, extremely vulnerable community of people who are trying to live their best lives.
