Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham’s comments in a July 21 ESPN profile have become one of the biggest stories in all of sports. In the feature, Cunningham was asked about the “MAGA Barbie” nickname some fans have bestowed upon her.
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” Cunningham said in the feature. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
She then doubled down to local media days later.
“I said what I said. I think it’s kind of common sense,” Cunningham said earlier this week. “And I think I’ll always believe in that. I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.”
In light of Cunningham’s comments, there have been statements from the White House, head coaches across the WNBA, and rallies and counter-rallies outside of Fever games.
Not that large of an issue?
On Monday, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy gave his thoughts on the situation on Wake Up Barstool.
“There’s protests for and against her at every arena she’s going into now. She’s being booed, she’s being cheered,” Portnoy said of Cunningham.
“I don’t think that’s an overly controversial statement to say, by the way, that you don’t think like trans should be in girls sports,” he added before admitting that he doesn’t think it’s really an issue worth all of the ruckus it has caused.
“It seems like such a small percentage of people. I don’t know how this story is so big and why people are so adamant both ways.”
He added, “But like with anything in the WNBA, it takes on a world of its own and something that you’re like, oh, this shouldn’t be that big of an issue.”
The Fever and Cunningham take the floor again on Thursday against the Las Vegas Aces, and there’s a strong chance this will still be a story.
