Heading into Tuesday’s Commissioner’s Cup championship game between the Las Vegas Aces and the New York Liberty, the discourse surrounding the WNBA has been dominated by Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark and her treatment around the league.
Clark was left with a loss to the Phoenix Mercury with a back injury last week, after an awkward landing from a closeout on a three-pointer. However, more notably, she was struck awkwardly in the throat area by Suns star Alyssa Thomas after falling to the floor in the game. Although it was missed in the moment by game officials, the WNBA awarded Thomas a flagrant 2 after a video review after the game, resulting in a one-game suspension for Thomas.
On Tuesday, Thomas spoke with local media about the endless narratives surrounding the exchange.
“I’m crazy, you know, the playing the game, being suspended, just the whole narrative that’s being painted out there. It’s unfortunate that it’s come to this over basketball. A lot of us, myself included, didn’t even know the play took place until after, you know, the game.

“And, you know, now we’re being painted as thugs, and there’s death threats out on us. So it’s really unacceptable. It’s something that needs to change in this league.”
It’s been a frustrating season for the Mercury, who have lived near the bottom of the standings throughout the first half of the season just one year removed from making the Finals. Hopefully, Thomas and her teammates can put this incident behind them and focus on making a playoff push throughout the second half of the campaign.
