Raegan Denton thought her invite to the Augusta National Women's Amateur was a scam.
The 18-year-old from Australia is making her first appearance in the championship this week and opened in 5-under 67 on Wednesday, two shots behind Maria Jose Marin after the opening round. However, when she received an email from UPS with her invitation to Augusta, she didn't believe it initially.
"So I wasn’t going to be home for quite a few weeks, even when I got the invitation in the mail, I was just sort of waiting for an email," Denton told Golf Channel's Steve Burkowski. "I ended up getting an email from UPS, which coming from Australia, I thought it was a scam. I didn’t order anything from the U.S., so I almost didn’t open it just in case.
"But actually I did, and it was the first thing I looked at before my second round of the Australian Master of the Amateurs. I just flew out of bed to go tell … I had both my mom and my dad staying with me, and it was an amazing feeling. I was shaking. I think my mom and dad maybe cried a little bit. It was awesome.”
Denton, who signed with LSU and will begin her college journey this fall, would go on to win that Australian Master of the Amateurs. That was her latest victory in a string of numerous since the beginning of 2025, including the Australian Girls' Amateur and Victorian Women's Amateur.
On Wednesday, Denton put together a bogey-free performance that included four birdies in five holes from hole Nos. 7-11. Denton said she believes it's her first tournament round without a bogey. After the first round, she's tied for sixth.
"I guess I didn't really go into the round with too many expectations, just sort of trying to do as well as I could," Denton said. "I think I just kept really composed. I didn't put too many expectations on myself and didn't freak out if I had a poor shot or anything. Just sort of tried to focus on what was ahead, and I think I just kept my cool really well."
A little better than when she finally opened that spam email from UPS.
