This week, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers unleashed some rather controversial comments as he blasted former National Institutes of Health leader Anthony Fauci and criticized ESPN for its coverage of the scandal involving Patriots coach Mike Vrabel and NFL insider Dianna Russini. Now, one former NFL star is agreeing with him – in at least one aspect of his tirade.
Following Rodgers’ high-profile comments attacking ESPN while on the air on ESPN, former NFL star running back LeSean McCoy has offered his support, saying the quarterback was “just keeping it straight 100.”
Rodgers Blasts ESPN
During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, Rodgers blasted ESPN for what he perceived as a lack of coverage of the scandalous relationship between Russini and Vrabel.
“What was this network doing?” Rodgers asked. “You had literally an individual that maybe used to work at ESPN, that covers our league at the highest level, and there’s a major scandal, and it’s just like nobody can f*cking talk about it? What are we even doing here?”
“Personal lives are personal lives,” joked a member of McAfee’s crew. “I feel like you of all people should know that.”
“I understand, but if it’s affecting certain things, if there’s leaks going on, if there’s tampering going on, if that person is also an MVP voter and a Coach of the Year voter— remember when I won MVP in 2021 and that bum in Chicago? That’s real life. How are we allowing these people to have an impact?”
McCoy Agrees With Rodgers
On Speakeasy, McCoy praised Rodgers for his criticism of ESPN as he called on the media to give the same attention to the personal lives of reporters and coaches that is traditionally reserved for players.
“He’s just keeping it straight 100. Every athlete out here, you want to criticize them if something happens in their personal life, you want to blow it up,” McCoy said this week, referencing a number of different scandals and stories that have filled headlines over the years.
“But if it’s not an athlete, you know what happens? They don’t even want to talk about it. No, if you are an MVP voter, you’re that important, why can’t you talk about it and dig deep into it? If everybody has their own opinions about it, it should be talked about even more.”
McCoy pointed out the extensive coverage of Tom Brady’s divorce and all the stories about Aaron Rodgers’ personal life as examples of players whose personal lives have been extensively covered.
