‘A targeted attack’: Boomer Esiason does not hold back on DiJonai Carrington after Sophie Cunningham incident

Over the weekend, Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington was ejected from a game against the Indiana Fever after a hard foul on Sophie Cunningham. She then made headlines across the country when she took to social media immediately after the ejection and posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE” on social media. Now, one prominent media member and former NFL MVP is speaking out on the incident.

Former MVP quarterback Boomer Esiason gave his take on the matter this week, going as far as to claim that he could call Carrington’s actions “a targeted attack.”

Carrington Fouls Cunningham​

The play in question occurred during the first quarter of Saturday night’s game. Cunningham went up for what appeared to be an open layup, but Carrington came from behind and struck her in the face, sending her crashing to the floor and drawing blood.

“Clearly, I think it was like, unnecessary. I’ve never really spoken to her and have no beef with her, but I guess she has some pent-up stuff. So get your [expletive] off. That’s fine. I can take it.” Cunningham said after the game.

Cunningham said that she believed the hard foul was intentional.

“Yeah, it’s intentional. She wasn’t even on the team. She has no reason to be doing any of that. So, good way to get her kicked out,” she said. “I don’t even know her. She wasn’t even on the team last year when all that was going on. But I do think when people play the Fever, we’re nationally televised, there’s a lot of eyes on us, and people just want attention. And that’s her just trying to get attention.”

Carrington, meanwhile, insisted that the play was not intentional and was just “unfortunate.”

“I’m never gonna let an open layup just be had,” Carrington said on Monday night. “You can pull clips from however many seasons of me making that same exact play. It was unfortunate that I made contact with her in the way that I did, but it was never intentional.”

Carrington has also pushed back on the notion that her “WHITE PRIVILEGE” post implied that she was ejected from the game due to white privilege.

‘A targeted attack’​

During Tuesday’s edition of the “Boomer and Gio” show, Esiason had some strong words for Carrington regarding the incident and her subsequent social media post.

“She immediately gets on her phone and puts out a post on Threads talking about white privilege. How is everybody supposed to react to that?” Esiason asked his co-host, Gregg Giannotti. “What are the opinions we are all supposed to have when you do something that stupid?

“I think because of the timeline of everything, because of, if you want to call it, the jealous nature, the legitimate hatred for somebody because of what they believe in and because of what they look like and because of how popular they are, I could say it’s a targeted attack.”

He certainly made his point loud and clear.
