£60m to £40m: Utd reduce price for star previously deemed ‘unsellable’ amid stagnant form, his suitors will be pleased

Manchester United have conceded they will not receive £60 million for Alejandro Garnacho this summer, prompting INEOS to lower their demands to £40m.

The Argentine, who was previously considered ‘unsellable’ by the club, was a major talking point of the winter transfer window after Napoli had a £40m offer rebuffed by United before opting against returning with an improved proposal, ensuring he’d be spending the remainder of 2024/2025 at Old Trafford.

That certainly came in handy when Antony and Marcus Rashford were shipped out on loan and Amad Diallo sustained a lengthy injury setback. However, Garnacho’s stagnant form and lacklustre performances have proven hugely frustrating for fans, especially given it’s now his third season of regular first-team football.

His performances have also seemingly concerned the club’s key decision-makers, too, as Il Mattino first broke the news of the 20-year-old’s price tag being slashed by £20m this week.

Garnacho could take his exploits to Italy – or stay in the Premier League

£40m for a player with 133 senior appearances under his belt and 41 goal contributions to his name will undoubtedly catch the attention of his suitors, with Napoli said to still retain their interest despite being turned down mid-season.

The Italian outlet penned: “[Antonio] Conte does not give up on Garnacho. He considers him to be a little crack, a little jewel. Manchester United could accept £40m. The offer that Auerelio De Laurentiis considers the right one? We’ll see in June.”

Elsewhere, reports suggested shortly after the window slammed shut at the end of January that Chelsea believed they had ‘laid the groundwork’ for a future deal with Garnacho, having held talks with the player and his entourage throughout the month.

It remains to be seen if they’ll act on their interest come the end of the campaign; Enzo Maresca will likly want to have his squad bolstered if he secures a Champions League spot.
