Decisions to be made by OKC. Do they pay the projected salaries for next season.

Just like this year, this is going to make the Thunder more vulnerable come playoff time. This is how the league works now even when you make it to the top. The penalty for winning a title is that you won't be able to hold onto your roster any longer.

NBA teams are going to have to get really adept at "next man" up and replacing your rosters with equivalent of what you lost similar to the NFL.

However, OKC is loaded with draft picks and talent. They can just reload and reconstitute itself with young talent.

And we did not even see rookie FC Thomas Sorber due to injury.

Having the ability to do it and executing it are two different things. For example, in the NFL the Steelers made a living for decades letting high priced, high profile guys go and drafting replacements. If your team is good at it, you will continue your success. If not? Enjoy your success while you can.

This is true. However, as long as OKC builds around Shai and defense they should be good.

I don't think Austin Reaves will get that kind of contract from anyone, 5 years, $239.25 million.

Reeves is good but he is not a MAX Player. If the Lakers do that they are dumb. He will end up being another one of those players moved around multiple times to shed his salary.

Max him, trade him or lose him when he goes unrestricted - that's the curse of the Supermax. And teams such as Chicago or Brooklyn will offer him the max if the Lakers won't. He won't be the only good player being paid like he's a superstar.

Maybe letting him walk for nothing is the best option but it won't feel like it and I can't see most teams going that route. Most would just overpay and try to find a way to make it work. With the new CBA, that might be even more difficult than they realize but how do you let a pretty good player just walk away?

Yeah terrible rule. I get that they’re trying to help teams keep their stars but it often backfires. Perhaps they should make a portion of the supermax not count against the cap or something.

I never liked the rule but I'm sure the league hates it even more now as it just doesn't work well within the current CBA. It all grew out of that Miami situation where they cut corners during the Lebron/Wade championship era. Lebron saw some report showing that he'd made Miami a lot more money than he was making. He and CP3 and others helped push the Supermax idea through but the current CBA restrictions make it unfeasible for almost any level player.

I expect the CBA to change when it is open for negotiation.

They need to compete with colleges athletics. Sarcasm but not by much.
