We were happy to see the competition, which was declared open coming out of mini camp and really went through the first 2 preseason games

They had to navigate the limited ceiling well respected vet that started the year prior and was popular in the room (Jackson) and the unproven backup that was brought in (Flynn)

Aside from experience and playing a lot of meaningful college in non- gimmick systems and both losing their spot at their initial school and transferring, the questions around then were very different

Russ was questioned almost exclusively about his height and how what would impact - he was too short to do things

Some of this did manifest - he was really poor short and intermediate over the middle and had trouble syncing up with the TEs

He could also be a little erratic early and sail throws - this would bite him in the NFL on occasion

What he had, that Beck doesn't, is elite escapability and higher tier running ability - in the emergence of the read option this was a weapon that opened up play action and plays at all levels as they would move the pocket constantly

Russ also has an elite deep ball - a much better one than Beck - it was the "easy" stuff that would catch him out

Russ was so dynamic in preseason, including earning his first start in game 3 against the chiefs - a game that he dominated in all facets

We were overall very excited to see what he could bring

He always has a bit of boom/bust to his game, but the booms were very good
Yeah but Beck doesn't struggle with the simpler stuff and doesn't need an elite deep ball to be successful. Watching Russ flame out and Murray flame out for similar reasons has made me really sour on undersized QBs.

Team a bit more transparent under ML but the organization’s ridiculous slow precipitous dripping of progressively worse information about injuries is total bush league crap.

Mike and Monti are the worst. Please leave.

Beck did struggle with some of the simpler items as well - I watched him miss buckets of basic throws, but overall he was processing to the correct look and would eventually settle in

Kyler was always Russ light - some similar traits, bit just didn't get it - young Russ wasn't always believable, but had an understanding of all that the position held

Then old Russ started to get concerned about legacy, started throwing teammates under the bus to protect his image and wanted to be in an offense that featured him and won because of him - he forced his way out, got everything he wanted and fell flat

It looks like they've all mostly patched things up, but was sad to see the downfall a little
