Yeah, but the team around him was also worse, and Jeanty did fairly well against the better teams he faced.
How did Love play against Miami this past year? Or Georgia and Ohio State last year? He performed well against USC, but their run defense was butts last year.
He's a great player, but he's a lot more comparable to Jeanty, tier-wise, than some of y'all are making him out to be. I'll be happy, but also very concerned if they draft Love and don't address the OL prominently throughout the rest of the draft.
Sure, as someone that's watched every career carry of his, I'd be happy to provide some context.
Miami: ND's starting qb was a RS freshman getting his first meaningful game experience. Miami had an elite defense and was hell bent on stopping the run, to the point where ND's qb checked out of run plays constantly. Love had 5 carries over halfway into the 3rd quarter and only finished with 10 carries. His longest run of the night, for 15 yards, was called back for holding, otherwise he finishes with 11 carries for 48 yards and it's more of a volume issue instead of a production issue.
2024, Love strained his knee in the 2nd half of their final regular season game against USC. He played with a brace on it against IU, where he still managed to break off a 98 yard TD run, but playing through it made him doubtful for the UGA game. He gave it a go but was very limited and finished the game with only 6 carries. Then he sat out the 1st half of their following playoff game against Penn State. ND was a limp noodle on offense that 1st half, trailing 10-0 at halftime, so Love came out and played an inspired 2nd half, featuring THAT TD run that everyone has seen by now. Unfortunately, he aggravated it again and was doubtful in the title game, getting only 4 carries.
Low key, his best performance of last season was the game against Pitt where he went 23 for 147 and a td. Pitt had the #1 rushing defense in the country in ypc allowed. He also did well against a top 10 Texas A&M team the week after the Miami game, who was also hellbent on stopping the run against a still inexperienced qb. 23 for 94 and a td but also adding 4 catches for 53 yards and a td.
The "he didn't perform against top competition" is just so tiring and lazy analysis imo. Saquon Barkley's senior year at Penn State featured these games:
20 carries, 56 yards, 4 catches, 51 yards vs IU
21 carries, 44 yards, 4 catches, 23 yards vs OSU
14 carries, 35 yards, 1 catch, 20 yards vs Rutgers
By your logic, he should've never been considered an elite, top 10 worthy back.
