James Cameron is making his stance clear on Avatar 4 and why he isn't sure about continuing, as Fire and Ash plays in theaters.

Cameron also wants to focus on a new Terminator movie, among other projects.

That interview was before box office returns started coming back for this. My fear is if this ends up being another bonanza he stays in Pandora to make the same movie again.

And he’s kidding himself if he thinks anyone wants another Terminator movie. I’d much rather see his rumored movie about the true story of someone surviving both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That sounds like a crazy story to tell.

Watched it with the the family this afternoon (13 of us total. I booked the entire back row for it).

Good things: It was much better than A2. Enjoyable, with a few tender moments plus some heart pounding stuff. It's amazing some of the creatures Cameron comes up with. Great effects.
Not so good things: It was too long. They could have easily dropped 30-40 minutes of run time and it would have been better. Some of the dialogue was a little difficult to understand. The ending was difficult to stomach

You just know the colonel isn't dead, plus letting Varang live when they had her dead bang just left most of us thinking, "Oh for gawd's sake... come up with some new bad guys, will ya?"

. plus the technology and cost of moving all that hardware and all those men over 25 trillion miles would have to be more than anything they can mine on Pandora.

4.5 out of 5 stars within its genre and it just makes it to 4 out of 5 stars overall. That was pretty much the opinion of the lot of us.

I don’t think I’d rate it as high as you but a lot of my opinions line up with yours.

Pretty solid legs for weekend 2, down just 28% for 64 million dollar haul (88 million for the 4 day weekend), 217 million domestic, 760 million worldwide in 10 days.

With the money it's making, Avatar 4 (and 5) are more likely now.

I did read that Cameron is debating not actually directing them though. Maybe that's the best compromise.

Way of Water dropped 52% in weekend 2 (67 million down from 134 million opener), and then the Avatar Xmas Break legs kicked in overdrive as it just started killing during the week, and actually was up 3% in weekend 3.

Very curious to see where the Threequel goes from here. The box office on these movies is just kinda fascinating to me.

Yeah, I'm interested to see to. The box office is fascinating combined with them having no cultural impact or even mentioned outside of their release windows. Star Wars, MCU, other huge movies are always in the zeitgeist and I don't see that with Avatar. I always figured that that helped drive the box office of the next movie in the series.

dropped all the way down to 11 million bucks on Monday to bring it's domestic cume to 227 million so it's legs aren't nearly as strong as previous Avatar movies, or even something similar as say Rogue One which was still making an astronomical 32 million second monday, 22 million second Tuesday.

Guessing that by Friday, this sits at around 260 million domestic and with another say... 30% drop from last week, that pushes it to 300 million domestic at the end of it's first three weekends in the theaters. If that holds, still think it tops out around 450, (which would still make it 2025's top domestic grosser) but no clue where it goes international, but probably lands somewhere in the 1.4-1.6 billion dollar range. Which is nothing to sneeze at, but might give pause to making more of these movies as we're now seeing the laws of diminishing returns play out.

If each one of these movies only make 2/3s of the previous movie and each costs 400 million bucks to make, and this downward box-office trend continues, then you're possibly looking at a 4th movie that makes 300 million domestic and barely scratches a bill worldwide. Again, that ain't nothing, but it's trending toward riskier territory than studios like.

I think it will, which is why I gave it a -
30% hold this upcoming weekend, which I think might be on the generous side. But it’s second Monday being down what it is surprised me. Usually weekdays between Xmas and new year’s play almost like Saturdays straight through to the next weekend. Def not the case here, even though an 11 million dollar Monday is still a nice haul for most movies.

Lol... I am an avowed movie box office nerd, especially with this franchise. even though I really enjoyed the experience the first two movies and thought the third was good enough, their off the charts success has always been a bit baffling/fascinating to me.
