I'm looking for a new cable modem/router - how do I find out if it works with Cox? This is the one I'm thinking of getting:

Motorola ARRIS SBG6782-AC 1800M SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0

I can get a slightly used one for less than $80 - I don't need it for gaming or heavy download use. Any advice/ideas?

I bought a regular name brand modem and called cox up to give them the modem info and that was it. I don't think there's a specific brand cox requires.

Thanks, Kate. Some of the reviews I read specify which cable provider the brand works with. I emailed the seller to ask him

Me: It this compatible with Cox?
Seller: Pls read the box, I think it is
Me: I don't have the box, you do, plus you have no refunds policy.
Seller: Yes, the box says it is

If you zoom in on the box, it does list Cox.

I've only ever used Motorola SB's with Cox and have the Arris 6141, so I'd imagine this one would work too. It has wifi which mine doesn't.

Thanks - I already purchased the Arris SBG-6782. Hopefully that'll make a difference.

The past few months I've had really slow speeds - can't even stream a movie on a Friday/Sat evening. Coincidentally around the same time I started getting offers from Cox to upgrade my plan.

Not coincidentally IMO. You sometimes have to be on them to make sure you are getting the speed you pay for.

Well, yeah ... I meant that sarcastically, lol. I know they limit your bandwith (especially when you get near the end of the payment cycle).

Are you looking for a modem+wifi combo or separate modem and wifi(router) devices?

Cox cable comes directly into the router/wifi - that is the only device I have. It is not connected to a computer, as I don't have any hard-wired, just mobile devices

Personally I always prefer separate Modems and routers. I have tried multiple combinations over the years and I have always had better performance, packet loss and throughput speeds with separate modem router configurations.

I am currently using a Surfboard modem and Asus Router and my throughput both wire and wireless are excellent.

^+1 and the same setup

It's also and added layer of security. Even though hacking actual home computers can get overblown the added layer helps. I'm referring to actual outsiders pinging the modem not malware being installed internally.
