Props To The Scouts

I just listened to the latest podcast from camp, and it dawned on me that, while most of us have given credit to the FO, and the Coaching Staff for the new class of rookies that have made thier impressions in camp this year ---- no one has really gone out there and thanked the scouting division for finding these gems for the staff to shop through.

This rookie class has really caught my eye this year ----- and they have made significant impressions on our veteran players as well. Deciding who will stay with the final 53 man roster will NOT be an easy task this year, and the coaching staff will have its hands full to decide who stays and goes.

While this may be a good problem to have from a talent standpoint, I don't envy the job that is coming for the coaches. I'm also positive that some of us will be disappointed when one or two of our (would be choices), fall by the wayside.

Just so you know a bit about Cardinal history...this team NEVER spent money on scouting...and extravagance was buying an extra copy of the drug store list or ourlads to pass around...i think they would gather around the tv set and listen to mel kiper before they made a pick...really. Things changed when the son took over the business and money was put into scouting.

So many things have changed, and it all began with the Stadium.

I have heard that Mr. B was initially given a hand-shake agreement by Carl Eller representing the Phoenix 40 back in the day, to move the team here and they would build a new stadium for the Cards. That never happened ---- and the circle of suck remained intact until we got the money from the Maricopa County Sports Authority to build the Stadium.

At about the same time, Mr. B. turned over the reigns to Michael, and the rest is history. New Stadium=new revenue, new blood=new thinking, new thinking = new scouting system, new coaching staff, new philosophy, new way of doing things, new attitude, new fans, etc. The only thing that remains the same is the so called (media experts), who haven't noticed that things have changed in the desert over the past 4 or 5 years. These ain't yer daddy's Cardinals------and, of course, us 31,000 die hard Cards fans who stuck it out all these years. Go Big Red !!!

Good point Catfish. The final verdict is still out of course, but I do like the direction the organization is moving in.

My real point is guys ----- even Michael couldn't have changed it if the revenue streams were not there. The Cards just did not have the kind of money that the Skins, Boys, Gints, Pats, Jets, etc. could afford to spend on talent, coaches, stadiums, et.al. I am glad that Mr. B. relinquished the day to day operations to Michael though, and the fact that it happened about the same time as the new stadium efforts got underway was even better. Money Matters !!!!

Four things changed the way our scouting department works -

1. We now have the same amount of scouts as any other team. We have 8 scouts now I think. Before Denny Green we only had 4 I believe.

2. Who ever decided to hire Steve Keim in the late 1990's, then Graves decision to cultivate his talent over the last 6 years (some props goes to Green as well in this department IMO, Green knows player talent and he may have been the first to really trust this guy and get his name known), then recognizing the skill he had grown over the years to give him more say, trust, then ultimately the scout leader.

3. It was Graves who found and got Mikey to pay for the current scouts we have, whom are very well regarded across the league.

4. A coaching staff that knows how to use the talent that the scouts find. If we didn't have the coaches, that talent would be wasted.

Joe ---- thanks for that input about Green and Keim. We are reluctant to give Denny any credit for the development of this team, yet it was his system, and his untested quarterback that took the vaunted Bears to the brink, before succoming to the (let's not lose) mentality, rather than the (dance with the one who brung ya) one that was needed to put that game away.

Denny was a good judge of talent and Matt Leinart and Steve Keim, Q, and Fitz are all examples of his judgement of talent.

Catfish, you're right on. Over the years the Bidwills were called cheap, but I always thought it was a question of the team being under funded. Here in NY the Giants had a stadium, but still needed more money, so they sold half of the team to the Tisch family. As they said at the time of Watergate, "follow the money".

Don't forget the money on coaching, too. Green cost more than they had ever spent -- and we brought in Russ Grimm as well as Whisenhunt. Didn't he cost a lot more than they had spent for anyone not the HC?

He is turning some heads around the league, and breaking many ankles too, as his elusiveness is drawing comparisons to Barry Sanders.

In a year where runningback is your most dire need. How did your scouts miss this guy?

The titans roster is already totally loaded at runninback. But there is just no way they cut Javon Ringer.

But cards fans can hold their breath, cross their fingers, and hope he is cut!

So true Jake --- I really like where we have come to, and I look forward to where we appear to be headed. The old adage is true: You appreciate most, the things you had to wait the longest for. This appears to be really worth appreciating.

Actually, it's wise to wait until the third pre-season game before bragging on a 2nd day drafted rookie.

Then you need to be intelligent about the team you are discussing. The Cards already had a stud 2nd day RB and had already drafted Beanie Wells.
You can't draft everybody.

Scouts miss on guys every year. For instance does the name Colston ring a bell? And I'm not talking about Colston Weatherington.

Speaking of Colston Weatherington has Dallas had any decent second day picks over the last say 20 years?
