Still not sure why it is a big deal to you, I was just a litlle confused.

Just so you know, this Suns board had been together long before the Arizona Sports Fan site was put together. It originaly started on the rivals site, which linked a lot of team boards together. I have frequented this site since then, since I actually got along really well with a lot of the poster (Joe Mama, Chaplin, etc.). After rivals shut down, the board moved here, and since I liked and respected a lot of the posters, I continued to come over and continue to interact.

Also, My family moved to Phoenix when I was a toddler. My Dad was a huge Laker fan (Jerry West/Elgin Baylor era) so I became one too. Since at that time there was no other professional sports teams in PHX, I ended up liking many different sports teams (Dodgers, Cleveland Browns). I have lived in many different places since then, including Boston, New Jersey, and Reno. Should I have switched allegiances because I moved to those places? That is not the way I am, so I have stayed with my favorite teams that I have had since I was 5 years old. My older brother still lives in Phoenix and loves all the Arizona teams, does that mean him and I can't talk about each others' team?

Not sure why I felt a need to let you know that, but there it is. I find it sad that you don't think that like minded people, with differing favorite teams, can't constructively and civily talk about a similar interest (in this case NBA Basketball). Are there jerks/trolls that come in from time to time? Sure. However, usually you will not see guys like me, Donald, or abomb condone their behavior. To each their own I guess, but to me it seems pretty petty and a little ridiculous that you feel the need to police boards from 'outsiders'.

You can 'support' your team, and still talk sports with fans of other teams. Are you honestly telling me that you are unable to talk to fans of other teams about a sport? Do all your friends only like the 'home' team? Do you ever plan on leaving Phoenix?

Let's see how aggrevated Kobe and his injury get when everyone now knows about it and will be hacking away at that hand. Guess we are gonna see how tough he is, and whether he can keep it healthy enough to play the rest of the season.

Kobe is in a no-win situation. If he gets surgery and the Lakers start losing, he will be criticized for not playing through pain. If he plays through the pain and doesn't play well, he will be criticized for not having the surgery immediately.

I listen to LA radio, read the LA blogs and watch all the games with League Pass.

Well, I guess you do get more bennies...you have the games in HD and you get the local fox sports stuff, which I devour when I'm in LA at my sister's house. That is good stuff.

As for the subject at hand, I am honestly torn. I am hoping they are just trying to get him out of the All-star game and get him some rest. With the West so tight this year and Bynum still out for awhile, I don't know if the Lakers can make the playoffs if Kobe opts for surgery. With that said, if the injury is going to flare up every time he gets hit, how effective will he be?

Do you? You did for the Cardinals apparently. I would probably support the home team wherever I lived, as long as I felt like I was planting my roots there. There in no substitute for the local coverage and other opportunities to support local teams. I would take attending team events, games, and things like that over following a team through a message board and TV any day.

It will be interesting, for sure. He's a tough SOB though, so I'm sure he's taking it as some kind of badge of honor, too. Just one more challenge for him.

The Lakers thread is in the Smack Shack. Laker fans don't start threads in here...but since the Suns fans like to start threads about the Lakers, we'll chip in.

I think it's great that you have a Cowboys thread on there. And the Patriots thread is also pretty cool. I happily bash the pats in that thread. Create all the threads you want..if there is interest, people will post. If there isn't, the thread will die. There is a TON of interest in the Lakers on this board, as evidenced by the threads.

This forum is a community of people who share SOME interests. Go look at the P&R section and see that that doesn't mean we share ALL interests.

And I'm a fan of the Lakers because my dad was a Californian who grew up in Long Beach and I still have a ton of family in Anaheim. I used to talk to my great-uncle all the time as a kid about the Lakers and the Angels. I grew up loving Showtime, and have never left the team because of how much it meant to me growing up. I don't really care all that much about baseball, but I do like the Angels still just based on my great-uncle's long suffering fandom of them. I like the dbacks because they were new here and I had no real affinity for another team. I became a hardcore cards fan working the training camps for them in 95-98 in college, and knowing the players.

I don't care for the Suns because a) Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge and b) their fans were aholes where I grew up and soured me on the team. Plus, again...the lakers are part of my childhood. I can measure moments in my childhood by the team...where I was when Magic hit the hook vs. Boston. Drafting James Worthy. Magic's announcement. Just like I'm sure you can do with the Suns.

If you move to Detroit, will you become a Pistons fan? Check that. If you move to San Antonio, will you become a Spurs fan? Why or why not?

I remember having floor seats to both the Lakers and Clippers (my dad had a great job at the time) and growing up eating pop corn getting autographs and watching Magic, Big Game James, Byron Scott, Cap and on and on. But for some reason I just never grew to love the Lakers. I think its because in my youth i was more interested in playing sports and around 12 I became an AVID fan. Truth be told in my youth i was more interested in the pop corn and lights then the actual basketball taking place.

And then I turned 12 (and moved to Tempe) in 1993. You don't have to be a Phoenix historian to know what took place that year and caused a lot of people to fall in love with that team. I have been hooked ever since.

So essentially we are the modern day Cain and Abel. I chose the path of light (Abel/PHX Suns) and you are the murderous/evil/Laker fan (Cain).

But on your overall point I am with you. I happen to rep my team because of the name on the front of the jersey and all the teams that rep AZ.

But I don't begrudge anyone who likes one team in one city and another in different city. Hell I can imagine there are a lot of LA based Cards fans because of the lack of NFL out there anyway.

As long as you are not a troll and making antagonistic comments (which will get you killed in here) then I appreciate the seperate point of view.

If you want to dedicate your life to hometown teams, do it. But it isn't a requirement. When Governor Napolitano makes it law to follow only the local teams, you have a valid point. Until then, why don't you chastise every Suns fan who doesn't like the Cardinals? There are a ton of them, so you best get crackin'!

What a great post, Cain. (see what I did there?) Seriously, I'm very jealous of you spending time in the Forum.

I am not that excited for Wednesday...I've already gone on record in the thread-that-shall-not-be-named as expecting a Suns win. I'm really focused on the playoffs though....it's going to be WILD. The West is going to be entertaining as hell, every series.

Yes. He's been playing with it for most of this road trip, since the Nets game. He had it taped together but that didn't work...he played like crap with the tape job. Then he did electro stimulation on it and it has been good since.

He said he plans to have surgery after the Olympics. He'll monitor it until them. Since it is torn, it can't get any worse...just painful.

actually, that's NOT what the doctors said, they said it could worsen if it gets repeated stress and that it could even sever. the conventional thinking lately is that he'll try to play with it, it'll really impact his game eventually, and that he'll shut it down.

I completely disagree with this and cast myself as Exhibit A why.

I was worried about this too when I moved to Ft. Lauderdale/Miami 3 years ago as I didn't know if i was a fan of the Cards/Suns/Dbacks because of the constant coverage on radio, TV and print and the ability to attend games fostered that.

But I hate every team out here and while I might cheer for them against some random team, I want them to get rolled up every time they play a team from back home. In fact I attend every game in FLA that a PHX team goes too. I think I hate them more in fact because I feel like some people out here want me to switch my alliegeince. Oh hell no.

The local media doesn't matter anymore. ASFN is all I need.

The Cardnals have made it hard to like them. Believe me, I've had those conversations for the last 20 years. I just don't get someone like you, a native, who pulls for the Cards but not the Suns. What gives? How is it different from the Cowboys fans here in PHX, and don't tell me you have never been annoyed by the Phoenix Cowboys fans. There is no law, but it does seperate fans who were born into it from people like you who jumped on the bandwagon.
