NEWARK, NJ – The Philadelphia Flyers (40-26-12) cruised to a 5-1 win vs. the New Jersey Devils (40-35-3) on Tuesday at the Prudential Center, powered by early scoring in the first two periods and great goaltending.
Trevor Zegras and Tyson Foerster each scored twice for the Flyers. Nick Seeler also added a goal. Cody Glass scored for the Devils.
The Flyers got off to a fast start in the first period, scoring twice within the first 4 minutes of the game. New Jersey then took control of the period and got on the board, but still trailed after 20 minutes. Philadelphia scored twice in the first 5 minutes of the second period and did not let up that time around. A conservative effort in the third period helped them hold on and cruise to the finish line in the win over a division rival, and it was capped off with an empty-net dagger.
Here is how we got to the final score.

Flyers score quickly, escape strong Devils’ push with the first-period lead
The Flyers got off to a fast start. Just four ticks under two minutes into the game, Owen Tippett (23) rushed into the zone alone, but waited for the play to develop. He found Travis Sanheim (26), who drove to the net, but instead of shooting, dished it cross-crease for Trevor Zegras (24) for the easy one-timer to make it 1-0.
Right after, a Jack Hughes trip put Philly on the man-advantage. Zegras (25) does it again, deflecting the puck off a Porter Martone (3) shot. Jamie Drysdale (23) picked up the secondary assist. Very quickly, it was a 2-0 game.
The game settled down after the Flyers’ blazing start, and the Devils’ intensity began to pick up.
Just over 12 minutes into the period, Philly had some trouble clearing the defensive zone, keeping the Devils’ possession alive. That would be costly for the Flyers, as the Devils got on the board.
Jonas Siegenthaler (14) grabbed the puck and fired it from the high slot. Cody Glass (18) was there and deflected it over Vladar and into the net, making it a 2-1 game.
The Devils started to take over, and the Flyers looked completely different from the way they did in the first five minutes. Philly picked up some steam before the period came to an end, and escaped the first period with a 2-1 lead.

Foerster piles on for the Flyers
The Devils got a power play just 31 seconds into the second period after the Flyers got caught with too many men on the ice. That did not keep Philly from scoring early once again.
Right after the power play, Tyson Foerster (12) went on a rush and went near-side on Jacob Markstrom, snaking it between the glove and post. Matvei Michkov (27) made the play along the boards to get Foerster the puck after serving the penalty.
In the first period, it was Zegras who scored in a fast bunch. This time it was Foerster. Zegras (40) sent the cross-ice pass to Foerster, which was tipped, leaving a wide-open net for Foerster (13) to finish it. Also assisted by Michkov (28), that goal gave the Flyers a 4-1 lead early in the second.
Just 27 minutes into the game, the Flyers had three players – Zegras, Foerster, and Michkov – with multi-point games.
Things settled down once again, but this time the Flyers did not let up.
New Jersey finally got a chance to get back into the game after Noah Cates got a penalty for putting the puck over the glass. The Devils had some good chances, but Vladar stood tall in goal and kept it a 4-1 game.
That helped keep it a 4-1 game going into the second intermission.
Flyers close out the win
The Flyers were a little more conservative to start the third period than they were in the first two. With the three-goal lead, they were not playing as aggressively, almost like they were trying to preserve the lead.
With 11:40 to play in regulation, the Devils got another power play after Denver Barkey sent the puck over the glass. The Flyers killed it off and then got a power play of their own 27 seconds later.
Brian Halonen got caught with a high stick, which put Philly on its second power play of the game. No success for the Flyers that time around.
The Devils emptied their net with under 5 minutes to play, trying to get back into the game. That plan did not work out.
Nick Seeler (3) sent the nearly full-ice shot to the back of the Devils’ net, capping off the 5-1 win for the Philadelphia Flyers.
What’s next
The Flyers’ final road trip of the regular season continues on Thursday when they take on the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.
