Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto achieved a piece of Dodgers history after his near-perfect game against the Chicago White Sox.

The Japanese star retired 45 straight batters, dating back to his last against the Los Angeles Angels. It is the highest consecutive figure in Dodgers history.

He almost made MLB history, falling one short of the MLB record retirement streak that was set by Yusmeiro Petit in 2014.

Yamamoto’s streak was broken after Mookie Betts made a costly error, leading to the first runner of the game being on base in the eighth inning with two outs.

Yamamoto still had a no-hitter even if his perfect game and retired batters streak were gone, lasting eight full innings until he gave up a home run on the second pitch of the ninth inning.

“I do feel a little bit regrettable, because I went into the ninth inning and I was not able to achieve a no-hitter,” Yamamoto said through interpreter Yoshihiro Sonoda. “I didn’t complete the ninth inning, the no-hitter. But how I was pitching, I was pretty satisfied.”

How did the Dodgers react to Yamamoto’s start?

Just like the viewers, Yamamoto left his coaching staff totally impressed and in awe. This group of staff members has seen him pitch on no rest in a World Series Game 7, making what he did today just par for the course.

“Sometimes as soon as he gets through the first inning, we feel pretty good about it,” pitching coach Mark Prior said.

“It was another special night for him. It’s not just the amount of pitches. It’s the ability to throw them in four different quadrants and have pretty good execution and efficiency with it.

“That’s what makes him special. It’s not that he’s trying things. He knows the right situations where he can get away with things if he does miss his spots. But he’s very calculated on when he does it.”

Yamamoto’s ERA falls to 2.52 with an amazing 0.84 WHIP, entering the Cy Young list. With such a high bar to clear, he will need to keep up this level, even if the results are not as good.
