It's a big weekend for Michigan basketball.
Yaxel Lendeborg, the former UAB star and No. 1 overall prospect in the transfer portal will take a visit to Ann Arbor, multiple persons with knowledge of the situation, but not permitted to speak publicly given his potential NBA draft status, confirmed to the Free Press.
Lendeborg, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound senior forward, has already pledged to the Wolverines, but has kept his name in the NBA draft as he and his camp continue to gauge the league's perception of him. If he is a likely first-round pick, he is expected to go to the NBA. But that's not a given.
STAYING PUT: Roddy Gayle Jr. to return to Ann Arbor for senior season
If he does play college ball, it will be in Ann Arbor. The upcoming dates to know are May 9-11, for the NBA G League combine in Chicago, May 11-18 for the NBA combine also in Chicago and June 15, which is the deadline for players to exit the draft.
Lendeborg was a star in 2024-25 at UAB, putting up 17.7 points, 11.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.8 blocks per game in 37 games. He was also named the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Those inside U-M circles view him as "“Danny Wolf Lite,” after he shot 35.7% (25-for-70) from 3-point range, but also showed dynamic ability to finish at the rim. U-M seemingly already has Lendeborg well in the fold should he opt to return to the NCAA ranks and impressing him this weekend could help, in part, sway that decision.
It has been a busy offseason for U-M. Recently, Nimari Burnett announced that he would return for his final collegiate season. The Free Press has also learned Roddy Gayle Jr. is returning to Ann Arbor for a senior year. Michigan also was busy adding transfers in Elliot Cadeau (North Carolina), Morez Johnson (Illinois) and Aday Mara (UCLA).
U-M is also bringing in freshmen Trey McKenney (Michigan's Mr. Basketball and a McDonald's All-American out of Orchard Lake St. Mary's) and Winters Grady, a four-star recruit, to go with Oscar Goodman, who enrolled last winter and practiced with the Wolverines.
