CLEVELAND - Veteran lefty Tyler Matzek has joined the Yankees bullpen, at the expense of right-hander Yoendrys Gomez.

After tossing three relief innings in Monday night's 6-4 loss to the Cleveland Guardians, Gomez was designated for assignment by the Yanks before Tuesday night's game at Progressive Field.

Matzek arrived at Yankees spring training as a non-roster invitee but quickly made an impression with his early camp performance.

A key member of the Atlanta Braves' 2021 run to a world championship, Matzek developed an oblique injury during spring training that had kept him sidelined until late March.

Controversy: Can the Yankees get Aaron Judge's home run back? Not quite, but they made a call to MLB

Matzek is now the third lefty in Aaron Boone's bullpen, joining fellow veteran relievers Tim Hill and Ryan Yarbrough.

Gomez, once a well-regarded starting prospect turned reliever, threw 46 pitches Monday night and gave up one run in his three innings in relief of starter Clarke Schmidt.

In six appearances this season, Gomez, 25, posted a 2.70 ERA, walking nine batters and striking out five in 10 innings.

Also on Tuesday, the Yankees transferred right-hander Clayton Beeter's rehab assignment to Class AA Somerset from Class A Tampa and DJ LeMahieu began his minor league rehab assignment at Somerset.
