The New York Yankees have announced notable moves shortly after their 13-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

After that defeat, they sent three players to the minors, including shortstop Anthony Volpe.

“Following tonight’s game, the Yankees optioned RHP Angel Chivilli, OF Jasson Domínguez and INF Anthony Volpe to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre,” the Yankees shared via a social media post on X (formerly Twitter).

The move on Volpe appears to be in response to the Yankees’ reported promotion of top prospect George Lombard Jr., per Brendan Kuty and Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

Volpe’s struggles at the plate and lapses on defense in the 2026 season have seemingly culminated in the Yankees’ decision to finally introduce Lombard to the big leagues. On the season, Volpe is hitting just .240/.325/.322 with an 82 OPS+. He also hit .214 in his last nine games with the Yankees.

The 21-year-old Lombard, meanwhile, is hitting .284/.411/.498 with 12 home runs, 33 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 78 games across different minor league tiers in 2026. He gets called up amid the Yankees’ pursuit of a playoff spot in the American League.

Now, the Yankees and their fans are about to see Lombard in action in the majors, and that can happen in the second leg of the Cardinals series on Tuesday. Hopefully for the team, Lombard will make an immediate impact, just like MLB trade deadline acquisition Luis Garcia Jr., who hit a two-run home run in the clutch in his Yankees debut on Monday, albeit in the loss to the Cards.
