The New York Yankees don't really need another starting pitcher.

But for an organization that hasn't won a World Series title since 2009, the Yankees should do whatever it takes to lift the trophy.

"What the Yankees need first and foremost is for Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger to be healthy by the time October arrives," Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer wrote. "After that, they definitely need another leverage arm and another right-handed bat."

Doing whatever it takes should include putting their name in the mix for a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner.

Yankees could target Tarik Skubal

On Tuesday, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported that the Yankees are one of five contending clubs that will inquire with the Detroit Tigers about superstar left-hander Tarik Skubal.

Skubal could be making his final start in a Tigers uniform tonight at Comerica Park. With less than a week to go until the trade deadline, Detroit is 3.5 games behind the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final AL Wild Card spot.

If the Tigers decide to sell, the Yankees should at least entertain the idea of acquiring Skubal, who has a 2.70 ERA and 3.0 bWAR in 15 starts this season.

"As with the Phillies and Dodgers, though, a Skubal trade shouldn't be ruled out just on the grounds that it's the biggest splash the Yankees can make," Rymer added. "And even relative to Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole and Max Fried, he'd be New York's Game 1 starter in October."

The cost would include a handful of the Yankees' top prospects, but New York's postseason rotation with Skubal would be the best in baseball.
